glad w hen th e d a y ’s w ork is done. T h is lack of in ­
terest is fatal to g ro w th and the fact is th a t stag n atio n
h as set in and th ey are m ere autom atons. T h e p rin ­
ciple of advancem ent, of gro w th , of progress, is the
sam e w hether it is a boy or girl in school or a m an or
wom an em ployed.
Prom otion req u ires th e sam e p u sh in g , vigorous,
alert m ethods. If y ou w ish to be so m eth in g m ore
ju s t an average w orker you m u st do som ething better
th an average w ork. If you envy people th e ir free­
dom from re stra in t, th eir independence, th eir financial
condition, it w ill pay you to in q u ire in to th e m ethods
by w hich such persons rose to such enviable positions.
Y ou will find th a t they w orked m any years for a
com paratively sm all salary, th a t they seldom took a
vacation, an d th a t th ey p u t every ounce of en erg y
w hich they possessed into th eir jobs. A t least such
is generally the case.
I t is asto n ish in g how m any young people are try in g
to get along w ith o u t h ard w ork. E veryw here we see
m en and women looking for easy places, sh o rt hours,
and th e least possible w ork for the g reatest possible
salary. I t is a p in c h in g , n arro w in g , co n tra c tin g
policy, th is try in g to g et som ething for n o th in g . It
narrow s th e in d iv id u al, stu n ts his grow th and is d e ­
m oralizing—th is g o in g th ro u g h life w ith o u t doing
o n e’s p art.
I t is th e d eterm in atio n to tak e a m anly p art, to do
o n e ’s share in th e w orld, to am ount to som ething, the
w illingness to stru g g le for advancem ent— the p u sh in g
o u t, th e stro n g upw ard heave— th a t m akes th e ex cep ­
tio n al m an or w om an. No m atter how h ard the tim es,
how m any m illions are out of em ploym ent, the ex cep ­
tional m an or w om an rem ains in dem and. So s tu ­
d en ts and readers in general, now is y o u r tim e to co m ­
m ence to am o u n t to som ething, if you do not already.

T h e arriv al of a supply of new pipe has m ade fu rth e r

possible and the plum bers w ill proceed w ith it as
rap id ly as th ey can do so.
T h e halls of th e dining-room building have been
trea ted to some fresh p ain t by th e pain ters. I t m akes
a difference here as well as other places.
T he ca rp e n ter shop is a busy place these days,
along w ith their abun d an ce of reg u lar re p a ir w ork all
h an d s m ake a top for our y o u ngsters betw een jobs.
T h e m achinists helped out the la u n d ry d ep artm en t
several days ago w ith some repairs to one of th e w ash­
ers. Since the m achinery is all placed and o th e r w ork
well along th e n ex t th in g is to get the benches made
and vises placed ready for use.
R ecently the black sm ith s m ade some baking pans of
q u a in t design for th e dom estic science d ep artm en t.
T h e pre-vocational boys in th e b lacksm ithing d e p a rt­
m ent are progressing rapidly in th eir w ork. T hey
are a busy lot and as a resu lt are learn in g .
O ur d airy boys have reason to be proud of th e ir
h erd , as m any in q u irie s are received from all over the
co u n try as well as close by concerning it. It is e s­
pecially com m end ted for its excellent h ealth. T he
bovs recently m ade some excellent grades in w ritten
w ork in th is d ep artm en t. G ood; keep it up.
T h e carp en ters p u t in q u ite a large am ount of tim e
on various jobs at th e academ ic building last S a tu r­
day. T h e y have m ade a new door for the S u p e rin te n ­
d e n t’s garage w hich will be in place soon. T h e pre-
vocational ca rp e n try boys m ade up a bill of lum ber
in class th is week and discussed the various sizes, k in d s
an d cost of th e sam e. Some m ore dem onstrations in
pre-vocational ca rp e n try have been placed on ex h ib it
as a result of th e ir w ork.

H attie Cay ton was cook for th e high school stu d e n ts
la st week.
O ur lesson on bacteria, yeast and m olds has ta u g h t
us w hy foods spoil.
N ancy M atthison and C lara M orris are cooks w ho
prepare th e high school lunches.
T h e ju n io rs w ere very eager to stay to d in n e r the
evening M argaret Jackson prepared it. I t looked so
very appetizing.
W e, th e senior girls, w ish to express our th a n k s to
th e eighth and n in th grad e girls th a t helped us w ith
o u r annual party.
