W inona C arrie A nderson had charge of the program on F ri day evening and h er en tertain ers w ere a credit to her. E llen Beall gave a recitatio n , a g ro u p of g irls sang, F rances F itzp atrick and May Spencer each gave well selected jokes and riddles; th ere were some song parodies by another g ro u p of girls; K atie Cleveland and Stella G rim es gave a com edy dialogue, K ath erin e Reed gave an im prom ptu, six girls appeared in a m ost lau g h ab le stu n t and several new m em bers w ere in itia t ed. T h ere was a lively business session followed by adjo u rn m en t. E xcelsior T h e E x celsio r Society m et on F rid ay evening, Ja n uary 28th. L- L. C h ap ter of th e Y . W . C. A . T h is is a m ost en th u siastic organization of in te rm e d i ate g irls and is d o in g som e splendid w ork. T h e girls of the Y. W . C. A. w ere very happy to have as th e ir g u est and speaker last S unday Mrs. E rail H au se r. H e r topic was, “ T h e O p p o rtu n ities at C h em aw a,” and she spoke of th e obligation to m ake good th a t rests upon every girl who has th e ad v a n tages of education and other o p p o rtu n ities th a t C h e m awa affords its g irls. Mrs. H a u s e r’s talk was very tim ely and helpful and was m uch appreciated by the g irls who heard her. M r. G eorge Irv in g , of N ew Y ork C ity, m em ber of th e In te rn a tio n a l C om m ittee of the Y .M .C .A ., was a visitor at C hem aw a last T h u rsd ay . T h ro u g h the k in d n ess of W . P. W alters, C ounty Y S ecretary, we w ere able to secure this visit from M r. Irv in g . H e addressed th e en tire stu d e n t body of boys in the a u d i tor ium at four o ’clock in a brief b u t very pointed talk on “ M aking E x c u s e s .” It was indeed a privilege for our boys to m eet M r. Irv in g and to hear him speak. T h e Y .M .C .A . m et in th e M itchell H all parlor on Ja n u a ry 30th for a discussional m eeting. T h e topic was, “ H ow a boy can be a C h ristian a t C h em aw a.” T h e leader for th e evening w as F ra n k C orbett. F re d W ilder, L ogan F an n and Cl irence A dam s w ere th e official delegates of th e C hem aw a Y . M C. A. at the In tersta te Y . M. C. A . C onvention w hich m et in Salem last w eek-end. T h e program for this convention included a num ber of speakers of national rep u ta tio n , am ong them being D r. Jo h n Brow n, J r ., w ho was for four years th e d irector of th e Y. M. C. A. for th e en tire C anadian arm y, and Mr. G eorge Irv in g of th e In tern atio n al C om m ittee. On S unday afternoon a tru ck load of boys w ent to Salem for two Big B oys’ Rallies in connection w ith this convention. T h e carp en ters have placed th e cem ent floors and foundation for th e new garage and will soon have the b u ild in g up, provided the w eather co n d itio n s p erm it. T h ey have also p u t in a new floor and porch at th e old office b u ild in g , w hich is now ready for plasterin g . T h e m achine shop is progressing nicely now . T h e m achinery has all been placed in th e shop and M r. E d w ard M uller is in charge of erectin g and the opera tion of sam e. As soon as we get th e m otor set and the m achines placed we will be ready to p u t th e place in to operation.
