A PINE RECITAL L ast F rid a y ev ening p u p ils and em ployees at C h e m aw a were favored w ith a rare m usical treat in the n atu re of a piano recital by Mrs. L illian Jeffreys P etri. M rs. P etri has enjoyed and profited by m any y ears of pianistic tra in in g in E u ro p e and A m erica u n d er som e of the w o rld ’s m ost fam ous m asters. She is a rare p ia n iste fro m any p oint of view — in te rp retatio n , a rtis try and technic. A dded to th e above she possesses a charm in g stage presence. U of O 2 7 , CHEM AW A 18 In th e first of a series of tw o gam es played at E u gene last w eek-end our varsity m et defeat at th e hands of th e m ig h ty O regon five by a 27 to 18 score. It was not an easy gam e for O regon and so one-sided as the score w ould ind icate, b u t close and hard fought th ro u g h o u t. D uring th e first five m inutes of play n eith er team was able to score and th e half ended 16 to 13 in favor of th e U niversity. N ix was th e sh in in g lig h t for C hem aw a and our h ighest poiut g etter, scoring three field baskets and co nverting four out of five free throw s, w hile C aptain D urno of th e U niversity scored th ree field goals and converted 14 out of 15 free throw s. Both team s reg is tered 14 points from field goals. T he fast steady passing of our q u in te t som ew hat baffled th e U niversity hoopers and kept them from p ilin g up th e big score they had anticip ated . O u r boys experienced u n u su al difficulty in locating th e basket and on th a t account, and not for the lack of o p p o rtu nities, w ere they unable to score. U OF O 30— CHEMAWA 16 T h irty to sixteen indicates a one-sided score and sounds like a poor gam e an d usually the defeated team is afraid to go hom e, but th a t is not so in our case. It is not a disgrace to be w alloped by a team like O re gon, especially w hen th at team ju m p s up on its pins and gets going like they did last S aturday n ig h t. A lth o u g h the score is som ew hat lopsided, it was a real live, in terestin g gam e from sta rt to finish; th e ball w ent zip, boom, bang for tw enty long m inutes and w hen th e first half ended the score stood 15 to 12 in favor of th e U niversity. T h ey claim they earned it. T h e second half opened up like wild fire and we exchanged basket for basket till the score stood 16 to 22 w ith five m inutes to play, w hen we fell asleep and were not aw akened till th e final sh o t of the gun ended th e gam e 30 to 16. E ach m an played a good, steady gam e and won th e applause and adm iration of th e E u g en e spectators; b u t, som ehow O regon had the stuff to p u t it over and we c o u ld n ’t stop ’em.
