H en ry T u rn e r was th e b aker in charge for the past few days d u rin g th e illness of his father, Mr. T heo T u rn e r. One of C hem aw a’s black bears will visit Salem d u r ing the latter p art of th e week as an advertisem ent for Ye L iberty th eatre. M r. Bettles is p rep arin g n in e w ell-fattened pigs for th e s tu d e n ts’ C h ristm as m enu. T h is certain ly sounds good and we w ager the porkers will taste good, too. Mr. Swoboda has tu rn ed his en tire force loose on the old shoes th a t have accum ulated in his d ep artm en t. It is the in ten tio n to have them all repaired before C hristm as. Mr. and M rs. A yers and child are v isitin g at the hom e of M r. and M rs. Sw oboda, ex p ectin g to rem ain for several w eeks. M rs. A yers is a d a u g h te r of Mr. and Mrs. Sw oboda. Miss S kipton was a d in n er guest on M onday of M r. and M rs. Jam es Lew is of Salem . Mr. Lew is is one of the officials at th e state p en iten tiary , a position he has held for m any years. P upils of th e lower grades are m aking splendid p re parations for th e en tertain m en t w hich they are to give on C hristm as Eve. F rom rep o rts to reach us we feel justified in u rg in g all to atten d . Mr. Iliff inform s us th a t he will give us th e result of his observations d u rin g his recen t visit to the B en son Polytechnic in P o rtlan d for readers of T h e A m eri can in one of our early issues in 1 9 2 1 . F ran k C orbett received a C h ristm as box of “ goodies” from his hom e in Id ah o a few days ago and very g en erously invited his friends to his room for a little feast shortly after. A nice tim e is reported. G ilbert C onner, a m em ber of the class of 1 9 1 5 , is here for a holiday visit. H e is an ex -n av y service m an and rep o rts indicate th a t d u rin g th e war he m ade good, w ith a plus. H is hom e is near P endleton, O re gon. F in e new uniform s, caps and leggings give the m em bers a fine appearance and we im agine they help out in tu n e fu l ness. On S u n d ay th ey m ade th eir first appearance and .played “ to beat th e band ” Miss S to n ebrink, teacher of room four and a-h alf, in ten d s to throw her room open and have a C hristm as tree for th e m em bers of her class. T he children w ill be afforded an o p p o rtu n ity iti th is way to present small gifts and rem em brances to their classm ates. It appears th e g ir ls ’ coach is going to experience the sam e difficulty th a t is co n fro n tin g the b oys’ coach — th at of p icking his team . Several besides the letter men bid fair for positions. W hile it is not a gam ble, yet it is really going to be hard to select th e first five. M r. Paul C orbett left on T uesday w ith his d au g h ter Josephine for his home in K am iah, Idaho. H e was g reatly im pressed w ith o u r school and returned hom e w ith a b etter idea of th e purposes and scope of th e g reat in stitu tio n called “ C hem aw a.” W e were glad to have M r. C orbett visit us, for he is one of the pro m in en t men of his com m u n ity — a m an of good re p u tatio n and of sterlin g ch aracter. P lan s for th e double g arage and w oodsheds for th e en g in eer and blacksm ith w ere draw n by M artin Colby. T w o senior ca rp e n ter boys will have charge of the fram in g and wood w ork, the concrete floor will be done by a detail of boys under the supervision of M r. M ason, and th e p ain tin g will be done by the boys of th a t d etail. T h u s it will be observed th a t th e en tire w ork will be largely in th e hands of s tu d e n ts—a good plan. T h e electricians are in stallin g a new 10-horse pow er m o to r in the carpenter shop. I t will be able to m eet all the req u irem en ts of this busy place and will e n hance the capacity of the shop. T h is is ano th er p er m an en t im provem ent at Chem aw a. T here is a co n tin u o u s ad dition of im provem ents at this school, w hich of them selves denote grow th and enlargem ent in all lines. S u p t. H all is certain ly successful in g ettin g th in g s of all kinds for th e general im provem ent of our school. T h e an n u al p rin ters “ big e a t” cam e off in the p rin t in g office on S atu rd ay last. M r. T u rn e y has given h is force a d in n e r for years on th e S atu rd ay before C h rist mas. T h ere w ere sandw iches of all kinds, biscuits, layer cakes, cookies, coffee, bananas, ice cream , etc., sufficient for foity people. T h e fourteen p rin ter boys, w ith S u p t. and M rs. H all, Mr. and M rs. T u rn e y and M r. and Mrs. Downie, m anaged to handle the large array of eatables. T h e force desires to express th eir ap p reciatio n to M r. T u rn e y not only for this com pli m en t, b u t for th e daily acts of kindness and patience show n.
