T he E x celsio r L iterary Society met in th eir hall
F rid a y evening and listened to a w ell-prepared p ro ­
gram . F ollow ing is th e program : Society song by

rence M erculief; clarinet solo, Dick Beasley; original
jokes, F ra n k C orbett: “ My experience in the n a v y ,”

our advisory m em ber, Miss H e n d rix , gave h er rep o rt
and th e society a d jo u rn e d .
T h e E xcelsior is well represented in the various
school activities, such as band, ath letics, o rchestra
and th e p rin tin g force, for all of w hich th e society is
p ro u d .

A ll business w’as om itted for election of officers. T h e
follow ing w ere chosen and elected: P resid en t, C la r­
ence E dw ards; vice-president, W illiam F razier; secre­
ta ry , Jones Spencer; treasu rer, G eorge T hom as;
serg ean t-at-arm s. C harles Moon; yell leader, A llan
S h ep ard ; assistant yell leader, Louis Colby. T h e
officers took their ch airs and after h earty applause re ­
sponded w ith sh o rt talk s. A fter a few rem arks from
our advisory m em ber the house ad jo u rn ed w ith yells
and songs.

In spite of th e how ling w ind and d ren ch in g rain ,
not to m ention a few flying fir boughs and shingles,
th e W inonas gath ered on F rid a y n ig h t as usual and
an in terestin g urogram was enjoyed.
T h e opening num ber was a song by Jo sep h in e Sha-
k an . Lucy Sexton th en recited a poem, E sth e r P aul
read a few jokes, E m m a Carlson and C arrie A nderson
gave a m andolin d u et, H attie M artin told a short
story, C lara H am ilto n . A nna B elgarde and C ath erin e
L am bert sang several popular songs, E d n a H ill read an
in terestin g “ C hristm as L eg e n d ,” A nna P erry recited
an am u sin g poem . T h is was followed by th e m ost
enjoyable featu re of th e program , an open house d e­
bate on one of th e lead in g questions of th e day ta k e n
from th e “ H in ts on B e a u ty ” colum n. T h is was wTon
by th e negatives. Miss R oberts gave a cheerful talk

of Chentaw’a m et and organized a club w hich is to p ro ­
m ote g reater athletics for our school.
JFlie basketball team is rapidly g ettin g in to shape
u n d er th e able coaching of M r. H au ser. T h ere are
tw en ty men out for practice each evening.
T h e Ju n io rs held an in te re stin g class m eeting last
w eek. T h e m ain topic of discussion w as a debate on
the relative values of E g y p tia n and A ssyrian civili­
zation.

of the illness of her d a u g h te r.

to spend the holidays w ith her d au g h ter.
M rs. Cox has not forgotten th a t C hristm as is near.
E ach day, w’ith her house girls, she is m aking b ea u ­
tiful roses and w reathes.
T he kitchen girls are busy m aking m ince m eat and
apple b u tter for the holidays. T h ey have m ade one
h u n dred gallons of m ince m eat already.
T h e M cBride H all g irls are very th a n k fu l to the
p ain ter force for p a in tin g th e ir beds w hite. I t adds
m uch to the in te rio r appearance of th e building.
