T h e stu d e n ts had roast pork on S unday as our pig m an, M r. Bettles, furnished several pigs for d in n er. M r. Roy P am bron of U m atilla a form er stu d e n t at Chem aw a, b ro u g h t his two boys to school on M onday. Miss L aw rence is actin g as nurse for the n ex t two weeks. She is a g rad u ate nurse and th e hospital seems to be in good hands. Brew er H all has tak en on a new lease of life. T h e halls and room s and dorm itories are well kept. Mrs. Rose Downie is in ch arg e of th e building V alov P earson, from th e K lam ath A gency, is a very good autom obile m echanic. H e dem onstrated his ab il ity on a big car w hich stalled in front of the school on Saturday. O ne carload of flour has ju st been purchased from th e F o rt L apw ai A gency m ill, costing eig h t dollars and som e cents per barrel. T h is is under the m arket quotation at th e present tim e. Flossie S k u ltk a and three other stu d e n ts arrived from K etch ik an , A laska, S unday n ig h t. T h is is the com m encem ent of F lo ssie’s second term . She states th a t other ex -stu d en ts are very an x io u s to re tu rn . T h ro u g h lack of space we are com pelled to leave o u t the reports of our literary societies this w eek. W e may add, how ever, th a t all of th e societies met as u s ual and good rep o rts of w ork done were handed us. " S m ilin g ” Jim m ie C hoate retu rn ed to school on S u n d ay . Jim is a very p opular boy at C hem aw a. H is genial sm ile is alw ays refreshing, as everybody likes a happy face ra d ia tin g sunshine. Jim will add stre n g th to o u r football team . T h e initial m eeting of the Sigm a Phi Delta society took place on S u n d ay ev ening at the home of Mrs. H all. New officers w ere elected, who are as follows: C atherine R eed, president; Julia Grom off, vice-presi dent; V eltha F razier, secretary; M arguerite C ham ber lin, treasurer; H attie M artin, corresponding secretary; E leanor H an k , chaplain; Alicia W alters, song leader. PAGE 3 A special detail of forty boys was sent to the lake bottom on M onday afternoon to g ath er the big crop of onions Some years ago we constructed a special b u ild in g 30x80 feet in w hich to store and dry our onions. It will be p re tty well filled this year. I t became necessary to cover the 30 or 40 barrels of corn w ith w ire n e ttin g in order to keep the rats th a t are in the basem ent of the com m issary away. T he b rine w hich covers the corn did not deter the rats, as they would ap p aren tly dive in the brine and carry off an ear. T h e school kitch en has been a m ighty busy place of late tak in g care of the corn, caring for all the apples and the g arden tru c k . M rs. Brewer is acting upon th e theory th at a dollar saved is one made, for all the th o u san d s oi gallons of stored up food th a t will come in handy th is w inter for our big stu d e n t body. VISITS FOREST GROVE S upt. H all made a trip to F orest G rove last week on business for th e governm ent. M rs. H all accom panied him . It sesms th a t th ere rem ains a sm all parcel of land th at was in the early days a p art of th is school's cam pus (F o re st G rove was the birth place of C hem aw a) before th e in stitu tio n was moved to C he m awa. and the governm ental au th o rities are taking steps tow ard tu rn in g it over to the U .S . D epartm ent of A g ric u ltu re . It is w anted for a site for a bureau of entom ology. T h ere are in the neighborhood of two acres involved in th e tran sactio n . S upt. H all re tu rn e d hom e m ost favorably im pressed w ith F o rest G rove. T h a t th riv in g little city is, as he says, the hom e of m any schools as well as Pacific U n i versity, and th e su rro u n d in g s and general atm osphere m ake a strong appeal to a p erso n ’s cu ltu ral instincts. As the birth place of our great school we are proud of F orest G rove. Y. M. AND Y. W. C. A. NOTES T h e V. M. C. A. held a discussion m eeting S unday evening, u sin g th e topic, " Y . M. C. A . ideals for 19- 20-21.” T h e m em bership com m ittee presented the pledge cards for new m em bers and an effort is being m ade to double the m em bership w ithin th e next few weeks. T h e Y. M. C. A. en tertain ed for all new boys w ith a stag party in the gym nasium last T h u rsd ay evening. Such in terestin g stu n ts as a pie-eating contest, and gam es too num erous to m ention, made the evening pass all too quickly. Good eats com pleted th e e v e n in g ’s fun for about one hundred boys. A football gam e has been arranged between th e I. T . C. and th e W ashington School of Salem , to be played on th e Chem aw a field n ex t S aturday m orning at 10 o ’clock. T he I. T . C. boys have been practicing h ard for several w eeks. T he two team s are well m atched and the gam e prom ises to be an interesting one. On S unday afternoon the girls of the Y . W . C. A. listened to a splendid talk by Mrs. K atie Brewer. M rs.B rew er’s topic was " T h e E xcellent G ir l,” and she spoke on th e qualities th a t go to make up the ch aracter of the ideal girl, and the way such a character m ay be b u ilt. H er talk was very practical and help ful and was m uch appreciated by all the girls present.
