Dodge, of N eah Bay A gency, brought in a party of nine p upils on S unday m orning. M iss E sth er S prague, field m atron, escorted a nice party of stu d e n ts to C heniaw a from Y akim a reserva tion E lizabeth M ontgom ery and Louise S ilverthorne have entered the Good S am aritan H ospital in P ortland to finish their tra in in g for nurses. Mr. K irk had the m isfo rtu n e to have his autom obile badly inju red last w eek. H e was run into by an o th er car w hile on the Pacific H ighw ay. Mrs. Brewer suffered a slig h t accident on Sunday by over lifting. W e are glad how ever th at it is not as serious as first th o u g h t, and she will soon be her norm al self. M r. W oods, who had a stro k e of paralysis w hile visiting at his d a u g h te r’s hom e at Oswego a week or so ago, was moved to his residence at C hem aw a. H e is doing well. E d n a D oughty was called to Seattle the other day to be w ith her m other, w ho was in ju red by being struck by a street car. Both feet w ere cut off by the wheels. H er recovery is doubtful. Ju lia Gromoff, '19, M arguerite C ham berlin and Effie Davis, ’20, retu rn ed the past week and have e n tered the Salem h igh school, Julia as a senior and M arguerite and Effie as ju n io rs. Mr. and M rs. A ldrich of Salem, accom panied by Mrs. Cooper of Los A ngeles, were interested visitors at th e stu d e n ts’ social S aturday evening, calling later on Mrs. Jaq u in s at the su p e rin te n d e n t’s residence. W ork is progressing on the new m achine shop. T h ere are sixteen different m achines on hand to be installed w hen the b u ilding is finished, w hich will afford a splendid o p p o rtu n ity for our boys to become efficient m achinists. M r. A dolph F arrow and family recently m o to r ed to Chem aw a from A dam s, O regon, for a sh o rt visit w ith friends. T h ey were en ro u te to S acram ento, C al ifornia, for a visit w ith relatives. Both M r. and Mrs. F arrow are ex stu d e n ts of Chem aw a. Mr Farrow was harness m aker here for seven years. T hey now have extensive land in terests in E astern O regon and are doing well. PAGE 3 Mr. Mason and a force of boys have m an u factu red cem ent w alks leading to the new library as well as connecting up the w alks along the railroad on the east side. A piece of walk was also com pleted be tw een th e new cottages and auditorium . Mr. W illie W innier, of T op p en ish , W a sh ., brought his d au g h ter to Chem aw a last w’eek for enrollm ent. Mr. W in n ier form erly atten d ed school here, leaving sixteen years ago. H e was am azed at the m agnitude of the school, its grow th and great im provem ent. S tu d en ts have been arriv in g on every train the past w e e k , and S unday eve chapel show ed a full house. C hem aw a’s stu d en t body is practically com plete again, anti m any com plim ents are being heard on all sides as to the splendid quality of our stu d e n ts this year. T h e im provem ents made th is sum m er in the en largem ent of the dom estic science room s has added m uch to th e efficiency of that d epartm ent. Mrs. Brickell and her classes appreciate th is change and plans are made educationally for a splendid y e a r’s w o rk . Alicia K im ball, class of '19, was m arried recently to M r. O scar W alters, w’ho has accepted a position at C hem aw a in the ag ricu ltu ral dep artm en t. A licia is c o n tin u in g her studies at W illam ette U niversity, her course w as in te rru p te d last year by th e illness of her m other. T h e kitchen force have had an unusually busy tim e lately p u ttin g up 30 or 40 barrels of sweet corn. 8 or 10 barrels of k ra u t, as well as quantities of pickles, apple sauce, and p ru n e b u tte r. O ur preserving d e p artm en t under Mrs. Brewer saves thousands of dollars an n u ally in the wav of caring for our vegetables and fru its w hich otherw ise would go to waste. Jos W P u ru s made Chem aw a a brief visit one day last week. H e was accom panied by his wife and they were m otoring back to F t Defiance, A rizona, wdiere they are em ployed in governm ent service. Mr. P urns is a form er C ham aw a stu d e n t and it is a source of gratification to find th at he is g ettin g along so nicely. Before visiting Cheniaw a Mr. and Mrs. P u :n s had re newed acquaintance w ith relatives and friends at Y a kim a, W ash. M rs. Jaq u in s has been th e inspiration for several most enjoyable social affairs d u rin g th e past week. Miss Sc holder, M rs. Risser and Miss W hite w ere h o st esses to a num ber of the cam pus people on T uesday evening, and Mrs. S herm an, M rs. V andagrift and Mrs. Cox on W ednesday eve; both affairs were d elig h tfu l. M rs. Jaq u in s will leave soon for her hom e in Los A ngeles and several other functions are being planned for her th is week. T he chapel services last S unday evening were, as usual, in charge of S u p t. H all. T he orch estra played ‘ A D ervish E p iso d e” by C ohen, Roy N uckolls gave ‘ K ee n an ’s C h a rg e ,” G eorge B arrett played a ” M elo d ic ” by Ole Bull as a cello solo, th e choir sang “ F orth from the D ark and S torm y S k y ” by B riggs. Mr. M cAfee, secretary of a conference of P ortland church- t s , was present and gave the principal talk of the evening. All in all the exercises w ere good and the evening was one well spent.
