M r. C harles D em m ert, of Bay View, A laska, spent a couple of days here last week visiting his children who are enrolled at the school. The prevocational grad es are m aking ready to pro duce a good en tertain m en t on W a sh in g to n ’s B irth d ay . T hey say the vocationals will “ sit up and take n o tic e ” w hen the play is produced. A bout fifteen of th e boys atten d ed the W hitm an- W illam ette basketball gam e at the Salem A rm ory last T h u rsd a y evening. It was a good gam e and W h itm an College had th e big end of th e score at its te rm in atio n . T h e In d ian ap p ro p riatio n bill as it passed the house contained provisions for $15,000 to be expended n ex t y ear for a steam heat system and $25,000 for repairs and im provem ents, besides $122,000 for m aintenance at C hem aw a. M r.E .H . She leaves tom orrow . Mrs. “ D ale” has made m any frien d s at C hem aw a by her kindness, gentlen ess an d am iability. Rev. F a th e r G all, M r. and M rs. W alk er and tw o lady friends from San F ran cisco visited the school last week. O ne of the ladies is a fine vocalist and she favored the stu d e n t body d u rin g the d in n e r h o u r w ith songs, w hich were g reatly appreciated. T h e C hem aw a g irls ’ basketball team will do b attle w ith th e team from Salem H ig h in our gym to n ig h t. O nly girls will be allow ed to w itness the gam e. T h e en tertain m en t was well patronized and enjoyed. Miss H e n d rix and Miss H edrick, assisted by Miss E a k in , Miss Ju d d and Miss B runette, held a “ house w a rm in g ” in th eir q u a rte is on M onday evening, h av in g as guests a num ber of th e C hem aw a ladies. From m eager rep o rts th ere m ust have been a num ber of unique features w hich caused m uch m errim ent. D ainty refreshm ents were served d u rin g the evening. T h e ladies who are dom iciled in the new em ployes’ q u arte rs are delighted w ith the possibilities of the q u arters and hom elike atm osphere. D u rin g the course of chapel Sunday evening th e o rch estra played the “ B arcarolle” from “ T he Tales of H o ffm an” bv O ffenbach, Russell A dam s w ho was visiting th e school, sang “ F or Y ou A lone” by G eelil, Ruby W hite recited “ T he F o o l,” by Service, the O ctet G irls sang “ T he O ars are P la sh in g ” by G eibel, the choir s a n g “ T he S inner and th e S o n g ’ ’ by T hom pson. A t the conclusion of the service S upt. H all delivered a splendid address to the stu d en ts, ta k in g for his topic, “ R eputation and C h a ra c te r.” T here was tr u th in every utterance, and it was given w ith conviction. E N T E R T A IN M E N T B Y R E LIA N C E B 0 Y 8 T h e an n u al open session of th e R eliance literary society, com posed of boys, w as held on F rid ay n ig h t. T h e earnestness w ith w hich these boys entered into th is program was com m endable in th e extrem e, each num b er being well rendered. A recitation, “ My B achelor C h u m ,” by Louis Colby, a double q u artette, an o th er recitatio n , “ T h e B etter W a y ,” by C harles B uchert; g u ita r solo by E arl P otts and an accordion solo by G eorge N ix , all of w hich w ereo fm u ch interest, preceded th e real feature of th e evening, “ A Q uick L unch C o u n te r,” a com edy. T h is en tertain m en t was p u rely a boys’ program , and they succeeded. T his com edy was well received by the audience, m any com plim en ts being given the various actors. A sketch in w hich G us G artiez and Louis V an Pelt were th e principals followed the com edy, after w hich a cam p scene and In d ian dance were given. T h is was a splendid portrayal of an old-tim e Indian pastim e; th e red lig h ts m aking it quite realistic. T h e songs and d an c in g were splendid. Roy N uckolls m ade the speech of welcome and the en tire society sang an o rig inal so n g in unison. Miss McDowell is the advisor for th e R eliance Society and divides the honor for th is very enjoyable and successful en tertain m en t. L IT E R A R Y SOCIETIES W inona T h e W inona L iterary Society adjourned th eir reg u la r m eeting on F riday evening to atten d th e public session of the R eliance Society. T hey show ed their appreciation of the very excellent program by songs, yells and enthusiastic applause.
