Prof. John R Sites, head of the m usical d ep artm en t of W illam ette U n iv ersity , and M rs. S ites were guests o f Mr. and Mrs. T u rn e y at th e basket social S atu rd ay evening. T he friends of Miss R u th Brewer were greatly in terested in view ing her p ictu re w hich appeared in th e O regonian last Sunday in connection w ith her w ork at O. A . C. T h u s far the present school year, w ith a larg er e n rollm ent th a n for a good m any years, th ere has been less sickness in the hospital than ever before for this tim e of the year. Miss G ertru d e E ak in is filling the position of te ach er lately vacated by Mrs. B axter. Miss Alice Judd will en ter on d u ty n ex t M onday as teacher of the ad u lt prim ary grade. M aterial for basketball is being selected for both boys and girls. A ctive practice will com m ence im m ediately after T h an k sg iv in g . W e have a w ealth of good m aterial to pick from. Chem aw a plays the redoubtable U niversity of O re gon football team on o u r field next S atu rd ay a fte r noon. On T h an k sg iv in g Day we play th e O regon City- A th letic C lub at O regon C ity. Mr. Daly keeps th e tracto r going th ro u g h o u t the w orking hours. It does th e w ork of eig h t horses. F orce is p u ttin g the new sterilizer at the hos pital into shape, m aking electrical connections. M inor operations are in abeyance u ntil th is needed accessory to the o perating room is finished. C hem aw a has a m agnificent stu d en t body th is year. T h e stu d e n ts seem to have come to school to get the best we have and they mean business. W ith th a t sp irit m anifested it is a joy to w ork. Mr. Loos who has been away on school business for some tim e retu rn ed last w eek. W e are glad to have him back and his tim e is m uch em ployed getting th e band and m andolin club thoroughly organized. Joe B ettles is a busy young man these days look ing after th e hoggery and the dairy. H e has about 150 hogs and pigs to look after at the hoggery. Seventy-tw o of them , how ever, will soon lx? ready for m arket. A new garage is being constructed in the rear of the cam pus w ith a capacity for three autom obiles. T here are nine garages at Chem aw a. Tw o more garages will be constructed for the new cottages on th e west side of th e cam pus. M r. and M rs. H enderson gave valuable assistance at th e basket social S atu rd ay evening. M r. H e n d e r son sold tw o kegs of sw eet cider and tu rn ed over $15 profits to th e C hristm as fu n d . M rs. H enderson as sisted th ro u g h o u t the ev en in g at different booths. W hile in P o rtlan d last week M rs. Loos p urchased a splendid set of fu rn itu re for the lobby in M itchell H all. T h e boys should be proud of th e added a p pearance to th e ir w ell-kept hom e. T h e tro p h v and read in g room is m uch enjoyed by the you n g m en. T h e chapel services last S unday evening w ere of u n u su al in terest. T h e orchestra played the “ Dance of the D ervishes” by C ohen, Russell A dam s sang “ T h a t W onderful M other of M ine” by B urleigh, C arrie A nderson recited “ W heedling G ra n d m a ,” T he O ctette C irls sang a Scotch song, “ Lassie o ’ M ine’ ’ by W alt, E leanor H an k gave a reading of her own se lection, the choir sang “ As W e ’ve Sown so Shall W e R e ap ” by Davis, and S upt. H all closed the exercises w ith a talk in w hich he gave a “ recipe for success“ and w hich proved to have been carefully and ably- th o u g h t out. W e hope to publish his splendid talk in our next issue. E ach of the divisions com posing the first year voca tional class in dom estic science gave a formal d in n er to especially invited guests as a fitting close to th eir first ten weeks detail in th a t d epartm ent under M rs. Brickell last week. O n T uesday evening the hostesses were E rm a LeC laire and A nna L aR ance. H e n rie tta C ham berlin and M ary Damon did the serving w hile the entire division had a p art in the preparation of the d in n e r. On W ednesday the other division e n te r tain ed , w ith Ida Brown and Sarah A dam s as h o st esses, and Jessie Cleveland served, the classes p re p arin g the d in n er. Mrs. Brickell, dom estic science teach er, as well as the classes m erit com m endation for the splendid exhibition show ing the w ork in th is d e p artm en t.
