E very altern ate ev en in g th e boys of the various b at­
talion com panies drill on o u r athletic field.
T h e baker is som e p ain ter as well as bread m aker
for he has painted a lot of fix tu res of his shop him self.
T h e engine room at th e pow er p lan t now boasts of
five new steam guages. T h is sh o u ld indicate w hen
steam is low.
The blacksm iths of late have been busy overhauling
farm im plem ents for sp rin g w ork, as the seaso n ’s ru sh
is practically upon us.
T h e painters are now engaged a p art of th e ir tim e
on th e new wagon shed. T h ey are trailin g the ca r­
p en ters m ighty closely.
Some of the teachers are exercising the pupils d u r­
ing th e forenoon and afternoon recesses at the aca­
dem ic d ep artm en t. T h is is well.
N ot long ago Mrs. Brew er and her detail canned a
lot of sm elt. T h is probably was an ex p erim en tal p ro p ­
ositio n , w ith an eye to the fu tu re.
Lloyd C lem ents arrived at th e school last week from
his home in K en n eth , C alifornia, and has enrolled.
H e was a pupil here several y ears ago.
M r. Bent is now d rillin g his physical cu ltu re classes
vigorously. H e in ten d s to give an o th er public e x h i­
bition at com m encem ent, if n o t sooner.
F ive flower tables are th e latest evidence of G eorge
L ekanoff’s in d u stry . T h ey w ere m ade at the request
of M rs. D oherty and are for use in Brew er H all.
W e have noticed th a t we now have an epidem ic of
stilts at Chem aw a. A bout th is season of every year
th e “ k id d ies” prance about on stilts. If we escape
an afterm ath of broken arm s, legs or necks we will be
glad.
T h e electric sew ing-m achine was out of com m ission
a p art of last week in the shoe and harness shop and
it affected the weekly production in th a t d ep artm en t
considerably. I t will soon be in w o rk in g o rder, if it
is not already.
T h e sp rin ters and all other track event m en have
ta k en full advantage of the recent spell of good w eather
and have gone th ro u g h th eir various ath letic “ s tu n ts ”
in th e open. T h ere has been a hearty interest evinced
of late in th e track events.
T h ree bench-like seats have been made for th e auto
tru c k . T h ey were used for the first tim e last T h u rs ­
day evening w hen the large Chem aw a co n tin g en t a t­
ten d ed the Salem Sym phony O rchestra C oncert. T h is
was a m uch-needed, and is now a m uch-appreciated,
acquisition to the auto tru ck .
N early all of th e departm ents got busy last week
and cleaned and beautified th e ir places of abode, pre­
p arato ry for an expected visit from a photo g rap h er
who has been in general circulation h e re o f late. N ot
o nly did our stu d en ts and em ployes respond to ‘ ‘sm ile,
p le ase ,” b u t the very buildings seem ed to also.
FIFT H GRADE E N T E R T A IN
T h e 5th grade of fifty-four m em bers held th e ir first
social last w eek. T h ere were 135 persons present, in ­
c lu d in g th e class, guests and em ployes—one of the
larg est parties of the year. As usual at th e m ore formal
class p arties th e gym nasium w as decorated w ith th e class
colors an<J pennants in profusion^ and an air of a recep­
tion roon^given by arrangem ent ;,f easy chairs, rugs,
etc.
A sh o rt program was given, after w hich gam es,
d an cin g and general m errym aking were enjoyed. T he
refresh m en ts consisted of sandw iches, cake, coffee
and ice cream , served buffet style, w hich was no small
task to p rep are for such a large num ber. T h is grade
includes stu d e n ts ran g in g from little folks to alm ost
grow n-ups, yet th ere were suitable diversions for all,
and everyone expressed them selves as having a de­
lig h tfu l tim e. Miss R oberts, th e class teacher, was
th e g u id in g hand.
M ISS W H IT E ’S B IR T H D A Y
T h e J u n io r class, num bering tw en ty -th ree m em bers,
took possession of the dom estic science d in in g room ,
k itch en and reception room on S unday and prepared
and served a delicious four-course d in n er in honor of
th eir teacher, Miss W hite, com m em orating the a n n i­
versary of her b irth d ay . T h e girls cooked th e d in ­
ner and beautifully decorated the dining-room and
table w ith the class colors, blue and w hite. T h e w in ­
dow cu rta in s were dotted w ith b lu e b ird s and they also
were flying over th e table. Blue bird place cards
painted by A nn S exton designated th e place of each
gu est. D elightful music was furnished from th e re ­
ception room by m em bers of th e class th ro u g h o u t the
d in n er. I h i s com plim ent was a com plete surprise to
Miss W hite and was m uch appreciated.
