W. C. A. M EETING T h e Y. W . C. A. held th e ir weekly m eeting in M cBride Hall last S unday aftern o o n . It was largely a t tended. T h e topic for discussion and read in g was “ G ro w th .” A fter a brief but in terestin g talk by Miss E ak in the girls had a sh o rt Bible d rill. Ju lia Grom off and Josephine C orbett were th e quickest in finding th e places. T h e m eeting w as b ro u g h t to a close by th e song, “ Blessed be th e T ie th a t B in d s,” and the benediction. Y. M. C. A. * T h e Y . M. C. A. held a very lively and in terestin g m e e tin g in th e au d ito riu m on Sunday evening. EM PLO YES’ SOCIAL A very enjoyable evening was spent by th e em ployes at th e club q u arte rs last T h u rsd ay evening. T h e host and hostesses w ere M r. Devol, M rs. Brew er and M rs. B axter, who spared no pains in p lan n in g for the en tertain m en t and pleasure of th e ir guests. A real good tim e w'as had by all present. Delicious refresh m ents were served. DOMESTIC AR T NOTES T h e vocational classes are very busy m aking blue serge sk irts for uniform s. T h e girls in the sewung d ep artm en t are busy m a k ing uniform s for th e n u rse g irls. T h e 7th and 8th grad e girls are h av in g th e ir first lessons in d raftin g p attern s for th eir co n stru ctio n w ork. Jessie Cleveland and Rose H am ilto n are g reatly missed from th eir classes. W e hope for th e ir speedy re tu rn . R E PO R TER ’S NOTES B y Allan Shepard T w o carloads of hay arrived recently for con su m p tion by th e horses and cow s of our farm . F a th e r G all has presented the cooks at th e hospital w ith a coffee m ill. T h is is a practical gift and is m uch app reciated. T h e ju n io r class received a large pictu re of Joe G ale, one of th e ir classm ates now in F ra n ce, and they have it fram ed and h a n g in g in th e ir school room . M r. Sw oboda and his harn ess m akers have ju s t com pleted an ex tra heavy set of h arness for one of th e farm team s. T h is indicates som e good “ lay in g in to th e c o lla r.” O ne of th e sto k ers of th e pow er house is in th e h an d s of th e blacksm iths for repairs. T h is is a diffi cu lt piece of w ork, but M r. W elch declared him self and his force equal to it. T h e blacksm iths are at w ork on a couple of w agons, one for the gard en ers and one for th e h og-tender. W e u n d ersta n d they will m ake the w agons entirely at th e hom e shop. T h is is as it should be. W illiam W a lte rs stopped over a day or so last week w hile on his w ay from Ju n e au , A laska, to naval q u a rte rs on M are Islan d , w here he is now stationed as a bandsm an. H e had been on a visit hom e. H e is m ak in g good w ith a plus. On last F rid a y evening o u r basketball team played a practice gam e w ith th e team from W illam ette U n i v ersity . In order to give all o u r basket-shooters an o p p o rtu n ity to play m any changes w ere m ade d u rin g th e gam e. In th e m eantim e W illam ette m anaged to to pile up enough points to call the gam e theirs. LOCAL C lark K im ball, an e x -stu d e n t, is v isitin g friends at Chemawra th is w eek. O w ing to the shortage of teachers th e norm al class is h an d lin g tw o and one-half grades th is year. W ork has been resum ed on the u n d e r-d ra in in g of th e school lake lands near th e Pacific highw ay, as th e w ater has receded into its n atu ral chan n el again. M r. C arrow and his m ason detail are doing good and ra p id w ork. M iss M abie C arter, of F allo n , N evada, will arrive th is week to fill th e position of teacher in th e th ird grad e. Miss C arter is a g rad u ate of th e U niversity of A rizona and has had considerable experience as te ach er. She is well know n to a num ber of C hem aw a em ployes w ho are an x io u s to welcom e her here. H e r p aren ts, M r. and M rs. H a rry M. C arter, are veterans in th e In d ian Service, at p resent in charge of Fallon A gency, N evada.
