S IL V E R T O N Probably as ex citin g a gam e of basketball was played in our gym on M onday n ig h t after stu d y hour as is often w itnessed. T h e co n test was between C he m aw a and Silverton w ith a larg e crow d of rooters accom panying th e visiting team w hich, added to our stu d e n t body and faculty, filled the balcony and stage in th e gym to overflow ing. T h e first p a rt of the gam e w as decidedly in favor of S ilv erto n , w ith a score at th e end of th e first half of 18 to 6 in favor of the visi tors. T h e last half, how ever, was a different story, w hen C hem aw a made 22 points and S ilverton 6, m a k in g a final score of 28 to 2 4 in favor of Chem aw a. D uring the first half our team did not seem to w ake up, but Mr. H a u se r’s enthusiasm and personality, put the desired “ p e p ” into th e boys d u rin g th e last half and they played a h ard , fast, snappy gam e, w ith th e opposing team ex ten d in g them selves to the lim it to hold th e ir lead. It was only d u rin g the last m in ute or so of the gam e th a t C hem aw a finally overcam e S ilv erto n ’s big lead. T h e C hem aw a ad h eren ts w ent w ild w hen our team began to pile up th e baskets. It w as a fine gam e to w atch an d aroused great e n th u si asm . O u r team is generally new m aterial th is year. Y. W . C. A. SO CIAL T h e Y . W .s, assisted by M iss E ak in and Miss Ju d d , C hristian w orkers, gave a most successful social on T h u rsd a y evening last and had as th eir guests the m em bers of the Y. M. C. A . and several of th e faculty. V arious gam es and “ s tu n ts ” followed close upon one- anoth er in w hich everyone en th u siastically took p art. It was a jolly evening th ro u g h o u t and everybody was happ y . T here was not one d u ll m om ent. T h e girls served refreshm ents d u rin g th e evening. T h e tim e for d ep a rtu re came all too soon, each one d eclarin g it w as one of the m ost pleasant ev en in g s spent for some tim e. Miss E akin is fast w in n in g h er w ay into the h e a rts of C hem aw a people and we predict m uch suc cess for her in th e religious w ork. M rs. E ato n and M rs. R isser spent th e w eek-end in P o rtla n d . LOCAL T h e fath er of C ath erin e and A n ita Reed visited the school on S u nday. C atherine and A nita accom panied him hom e to Coos B ay. C ath erin e re tu rn e d y ester day. T h e older stu d e n ts had a good tim e at th e b im o n th ly social S atu rd ay n ig h t. T h e Y . M. C. A . sold cake, coffee and snails to raise a little fu n d for association expenses. L u m b er is on the gro u n d for construction of an im plem ent house and w ork has been begun by th e c a rp e n - ter d etail. I t will be fitted for tem p o rary use as a stable far our new horses. C hem aw a has a large lot of onions sto red aw ay, a g reater q u a n tity th a n can be used by th e stu d en ts. T h ere are also m ore potatoes and ca rro ts on h an d th an has been the case for a num ber of years. M r. C hapm an, our new baker, has purchased a b ak ing establishm ent at Dallas and will leave us on F e b ru ary first. H e will be succeeded by M r. W illiam M iztier, a professional baker of Salem . T h e stu d e n ts are en joying the popcorn delivered to the v arious q u arte rs. H om e-m ade poppers are kept busy d u rin g spare m om ents. T h e w riter has never seen finer popcorn th a n th a t raised the past season at C hem aw a. T h e Sigm a P h i’s are arran g in g for th eir annual so cial to be given on the first open d a te after th e E x c e l sior e n te rta in m e n t and p a rty , w hich is expected to be on F eb ru ary first. N ext in order is th e S en io rs’ a n nual p arty . T h e w eekly m eeting of th e Y. M. C. A . was held in the au d ito riu m Ja n u ary 12th. A fter sin g in g sev eral songs, Paul L ip h art told of the Y. M. C. A. w ork in th e n avy. M r. Roberson also gave a little talk in closing. Several new m em bers w ere tak en into th e association. T h e d ig g in g of drainage tren ch es is bein g en e rg e t ically p ushed. M r. C arrow and a force of boys are at w ork in th e 30-acre lake track near th e Pacific H ig h way th is w eek. A bout fifteen acres of wet lake land have been grubbed and made ready for th e plow and d rain ag e laterals. It is expected to use wood drainage boxes.
