O ur stu d en ts will be very glad to know th a t Della Moss, w ho has been seriously ill, is now rapidly re covering . T he school battalion officers had an ex am ination on M onday evening. M r. Bent is w orking u p a league of basketball team s from m aterial in th e various school shops. T h is looks like a good move. T h e g irls ’ basketball team s are rapidly g ettin g into form for real contests. T he"e are some good players am ong th em , we assure you. T h e ath letic buffet seem s to doing a good business. Bob Downie, stu d e n t body president, is q u ite busy at tim es su p erv isin g the business. Miss H e n d rix was ill for a couple of days the past w eek, as w ere Miss S kipton and Mrs. B ax ter, th e la tte r tw o em ployes being still confined to th e ir beds. T h e basket social for th e sm aller stu d e n ts was held on S a tu rd a y n ig h t and w as a very enjoyable affair for these y o u n g sters besides n e ttin g a neat little sum for the C h ristm as fu n d . A bout 30 sets of harness have been ordered by th e In d ia n D ep artm en t for various schools and agencies. Mr. Sw oboda, th e school h arn ess-m ak er, is q u ite busy w ith his force of boys filling th e ord er. C odding is devoting full tim e in giving lectures and otherw ise tra in in g these girls. G alucia N elson, a form er C hem aw a pupil, is now located at C ordova, A laska, and from all accounts is g e ttin g along nicely. H e is a constant reader of the A m erican an d in th is way keeps in touch w ith affairs at th e school. E va W h ite, from the K lam ath A gency, has retu rn ed to C hem aw a to finish her course in th e Salem Business College. She was delayed on account of th e epidem ic. H er sister, R uby, did not re tu rn , as she is a tte n d in g high school at K lam ath F alls. T h e football banquet for the 24 m em bers of the squad will be held soon. C hem aw a owes it to these y o u n g m en for clean play and gentlem anly conduct th ro u g h o u t th e season as well as for so m anfully u p holding the honor of the school on th e gridiron. T h e n e x t society open session program will be bv th e E xcelsiors. In th e past this has been considered one o f the strongest societies at C hem aw a. T he m em bership th is year, how ever, is sm all on account of so m any m em bers jo in in g th e colors, b u t th e boys re m aining will no doubt be heard from . M rs. Eoos speaks h ighly of A lbert Spearson and G eorge B rem ner in connection w ith th e care of th eir room . T hey have lately added new cu rta in s, dresser an d table covers, and take all-round pride in their room . She also says th a t th ere are a lot of room s in M itchell H all w orthy of special m ention. T h e y o u n g er boys have been spen d in g th e ir spare tim e w o rking in the carro t fields of a neighbor pullin g and sack in g carrots the past few weeks, e a rn in g not a few dollars by so doing, w hich enabled them also to buy the g irls ’ baskets at the social S atu rd ay evening. T he sm allest boys in school are able to do th is w ork. C hem aw a started o u t school this year in a most flourishing condition w ith a full quota of stu d e n ts on th e cam pus. T h e epidem ic of O ctober, w hen we had 436 cases of influenza, retarded th e w ork, but th e school recu perated quickly an d is now in its norm al con d itio n . I t is rem arkable how q u ick ly all accom m odated them selves to conditions and in spite of th e in te rru p tio n of O ctober C hem aw a will have one of its m ost successful years. T h e exercises in chapel on S unday ev en in g were of special in terest to all. T h e orchestra played a “ H u n g arian Id y lle ” by K eler-B ela, M aud C raig sa n g a “ L u l la b y ” by B rahm s, the O ctette G irls san g th e “ R ev e rie ” by W oodbury, and th e choir san g th e “ T w i lig h t S eren ad e” by G ard n er. As a fittin g close S u p t. H all spoke very stro n g ly to th e stu d e n ts on m a t ters relative to energy its e x p e n d itu re and its conser vation. I t was a good talk .
