T h e gard en ers have been very busy th e last few days sp ray in g the grow ing vegetables in order to destroy insects. Molly M ischell has been assigned th e position of m atron in W in o n a H all to fill th e vacancy caused by th e resignation of M rs. Daly. M r. G alb raith rep o rts th a t it will be b u t a few weeks before he will have fifty pigs for sale. A finer bunch of pigs it w ould be hard to find. P ro te sta n t ch u rch services, w hich have been held Sunday afternoons in th e au d ito riu m each w eek, have been discontinued for th e balance of th e year. S atu rd ay was th e occasion of th e bi-m onthlv social for the stu d en ts. Ice cream w as sold, th e proceeds to be used in p u rch asin g chevrons for th e officers. A great m any im provem ents have been m ade at C he m awa d u rin g this y ear in every d ep artm en t. T h e c a r penters and all tradesm en have h ad a busy tim e. T h e general o rg an izatio n of th e school forces th is year has been very com pact and in consequence there has been no friction, b u t excellent w ork perform ed. M r. B ent and several of th e com pany officers spent a day at th e O regon A g ricu ltu ral College to w itness th e various drills by th e battalions in tra in in g at th a t college. Inspectio n on S u n d ay last by th e S u p erin ten d en t and officers show ed m uch in terest on the p art of m a tro n s and stu d en ts, for each b u ild in g was in im m acu late condition. M r. F ran cis J. Scott, chief clerk, has received in stru ctio n s to rep o rt to F o rt H ancock, G eorgia. H e was inducted in to th e N ational A rm y today and leaves at once for P o rtlan d and from th e re goes direct E ast. T h u s C hem aw a loses an efficient clerk, a pleasant gentlem an. H is place will be h ard to fill. F ra n k L. Johnson, stu d e n t at th e U niversity of O re g o n , E uegene, was a w eek-end visitor. T h e band discoursed m usic for the W illam ette College M ay Day celebration last P'riday and S a tu r day. T h e dairy detail is su p p ly in g th e school w ith wood from th e school tim ber an d th ey are m aking a good job of it. T h e dairy detail butch ered tw o young calves on M onday and sold them to a m eat m arket in Salem at 18 cents a p ound. B ent, the disciplinarian, is not idle these days by any m eans. A new featu re w ill be added th is year in th a t th e re w ill be a com petitive drill betw een the sergeants and corporals. X avier, M on ta n a, w rites us th a t he has resigned th ere and has ac cepted a steady position at M ontesano, W a sh ., as a mill w rig h t at a salary of $120 per m o n th . C aptain D ow nie, C om pany A , and C aptain B ettles, C om pany B, are giving th e ir best efforts tow ards b rin g in g u p th e ir respective com m ands to th e h ighest p o in t of efficiency. B oth of these captains declare th e ir com pany will secure th e prize at the com petitive d rill. C hem aw a em ployes are now p la n n in g for th eir sum m er vacations.
