TH E CHEMAW A AMERICAN LOCAL Mrs. Fratis has been quite ill with a cold, but is now on duty. Mrs. Doherty was a dinner guest of Superintendent and Mrs. Hall on Sunday. Mr. Mitchell went to Cathlamet, Washington, on official business on Friday. Mr. Roberson is working on the play, “ Pocahontas,” which is to be presented soon. Mrs. Perkins has been confined to her room for nearly a week with a severe cold. Mr. Bent gathered all the boys together in the gym Monday evening and gave them an excellent talk. The McBride Hall girls appreciate the very helpful talk given to them by Superintendent Hall after chapel on Sunday evening. Mr. C. D. Chandler, representative of the Southern Pacific Company, visited Chemawa on Monday and gave the Brewer Hall boys a short talk during the noon hour. George W. Bent arrived at Chemawa on Sunday to assume the duties of disciplinarian. Mr. Bent has had considerable experience in the work, having been disciplinarian at Genoa for some years. He comes highly recommended. A return game of basketball with the Salem High School was played by our girls in the Salem gym on Friday afternoon. Boys’ rules were observed. The results showed a score of 11 to 10 in favor of Salem. Rose O ’Brien, our star player, received a cut on the lip early in the second half which prevented her from finishing the game, which probably accounts for the defeat. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kirkpatrick, of Arlee, Mon tana, who have been visiting their children at Chemawa for the past week, left for home on Monday. They wish to thank the Seniors and Juniors for their cour tesy in inviting them to the class party, as well as to all others, for the kindnesses shown them generally during their stay. They were much pleased with Chemawa. Our Domestic Science class under direction of Miss Lemley prepared a delicious little supper for the bas ketball teams— Silverton and Chemawa— which was enjoyed after the game on Saturday night. Agnes Swanson, Jessie Cleveland and Louise Demaconserved the supper. ' Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Jaquins assisted the girls in entertaining their guests. After the supper Marie Shaishnikoff delighted the visitors with clever songs, accompanying herself on the ukelele. The friends of Margaret Reinville were very much surprised to hear of her marriage to Mr. Merle Parker of Portland. She and her husband drove down from Portland Saturday and personally announced their PAGE 3 marriage. It came as a distinct surprise since Mrs. Parker visited at Chemawa the previous week and stated her intention of graduating from the hospital in a short while. Instead of that she went to her father’s home in Walla Walla, where she and Mr. Parker were married. Mr. Parker is a business man in Portland and the young couple will take an apartment in that city. For the past two months Reginald Downie has been acting as disciplinarian. His dignified and fair methods, coupled with constancy and interest in the woik, has enabled a most harmonious and satisfactory condition as regards the management of the boys to exist. Reg gie has shown a force of character and capability that is unusual and bespeaks a successful future. CHAPEL Chapel on Sunday evening was very much enjoyed. The program was as follows: “ Melody of Love,” by the orchestra; “ Joan of A rc,” by the choir; “ Lulla- bye,” by the male quartet, and a recitation by Flor ence Hoover. Supt. Hall gave a very forceful talk relating to various incidents in the school life. SENIOR-JUNIOR PAR TY The Seniors and Juniors held their annual Valentine party last Thursday night in the gymnasium. One end of the gym was transformed into a comfortable living room and a most enjoyable time was had before refreshments were served. George Barrett played a beautiful ’cello solo. Refreshments were served on the platform in cafeteria style. It was a very en joyable affair and a great success. V A LE N TINE PAR TY Miss Lemley, Miss White and Mr. and Mrs. Loos entertained a small coterie of guests in the Domestic Science department Thursday night, with a beautiful ly arranged Valentine party. Everything to the min utest detail was carried out in the Valentine scheme. Games were played during the first part of the evening and Superintendent Hall was the lucky recipient of a saucy little Kewpie. Refreshments were served at one large table ingeniously decorated with hearts and clever heart-shaped place cards marking each place. The refreshments were delicious and dainty. A CLOSE GAME The concluding game of basketball this season for our girls took place last Saturday evening when they defeated the Silverton High School team on our floor. It was a most hotly contested game and our girls were requiied to extend themselves to the limit in order to win. At the end of the first half the score stood 4 to 0 in favor of Silverton. Our girls realized that they would be compelled to play a swifter and better quality of ball if they were to succeed in winning the game and they went into it with all their skill and force and immediately began to score, and won the game by one point as the final result showed 10 to 9 in favor of Chemawa. The Chemawa players were Rose O’ Brien, Effie Davis, Bertha Grimes, Florence Hoover, Mae Adams Marie Shaishnikoff replaced Effie Davis as forward in the second half.
