It is understood th a t M r. S tu a rt, plum ber, w ho is now in San F rancisco, will sh o rtly re tu rn to Che- m aw a and assist in p u ttin g in th e steam p ip in g to the la u n d ry . It is expected th a t M rs. M ary K . B row n, w ho was em ployed as assista n t m atro n last y ear, will re tu rn soon and tak e up the d u tie s of house m other at M c Bride H all. A force of fo u r girls, u n d er th e supervision of Miss S kipton, are p re p a rin g very good, su b stan tial m eals for th e basketball boys. F rom now on we ex p ect a change in th e scores. M r. J. A. B lessing, chief engineer, is rap id ly ro u n d in g o u t th e en g in eerin g d ep artm en ts in to a well- organized w hole. H e is a hard w o rk in g and capable engineer and m anager. T h e g irls’ basketball team will play th e Silverton H ig h School at Silverton n ex t F rid a y evening. P erk in s was th e guest of her b ro th er, Ju d g e Benson, in Salem on M onday n ig h t. R atzberg, brother-in-law of our popular trader, M r. H enderson, was a visitor at C hem aw a last w eek, looking over the farm w ith a view of ta k in g u p the w ork of teacher of ag ricu ltu re w hen M r. Daly leaves to en ter th e signal corps. T h e p atien ts at th e hospital appreciate M rs. B rew er’s kindness in su pplying them w ith b u tte r and eggs. T h e chickens are looked after by M rs. Brewer and her prevocational cooks. E ach week a goodly q u an tity of b u tter is made in th e old-fashioned, hom e m ade, fam ily c h u rn . All available team s were used on M onday plow ing. It is expected to “ keep it u p ” u n til every foot of g ro u n d is broken and seeded. T he u n u su ally w et w in ter, and th a t m eans som ething in th e W illam ette V alley, to g eth er w ith the necessity of th e school h a u l in g all of its thousands of tons of coal has retarded farm ing o perations. T h e Social given last S atu rd ay n ig h t for the benefit of th e athletic association was a big success. Both stu d e n ts and em ployes co n trib u ted w hole h earted ly to the cause. M rs. Brewer m ade th e d e li cious ice cream , coffee and d o u g h n u ts placed on sale for the occasion and a goodly sum was realized from these refreshm ents. T h e m anager and all wish to ex p ress th e ir appreciation for th e keen in te re st M rs. Brew er has show n by aid in g so w illingly. C hem aw a will be able to “ go th ro u g h ” the year w ith th e funds ap p ro p riated , b u t it will be close w ork. A few thousand e x tra dollars w ould come in handy, how ever. W ith the high cost of all com m odities, and no increase in funds over those given in th e pasj, it is “ close sle d d in g ,” especially w ith a full school. O ur farm and garden have been th e m eans by w hich we are enabled to g et th ro u g h . T h e main item of e x pense is for fuel, w hich will be nearly double th a t of previous years. CHEM AW A O ne of th e fastest game's of basketball and best dis play of team w ork staged on our floor this year was th at of last F rid a y evening betw een th e U niversity of O re gon and Chem aw a. C hem aw a started out stro n g and led for aw hile, req u irin g th e visitors to ex ten d th em selves to th e utm ost lim it. O ne of th e U niversity for w ards was a phenom enal player, quick as a flash and a perfect basket throw er. H e was, how ever, of su ch sm all sta tu re and so lig h t th a t our big fellows in ru sh in g after the ball would collide w ith him and dow n he w ent nearly every tim e, m aking it appear as if our men w ere “ ro u g h in g i t , ” resu ltin g in m any fouls being called. I t w as an ex citin g gam e from sta rt to finish, every point being earned on both sides. T h e final score w as 31 to 24 in favor of th e U niversity.
