I THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN LOCALS The academic teachers are preparing an entertain ment for Thanksgiving. The new sectional boiler just installed in the hospi tal is doing excellent work. A second anthem rendered on Sunday night by the newly-organized choir was a treat. Our football team plays the Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis next Saturday. Miss Gertrude Brewer has her hands full these days in connection with the music classes. An inventory of the supplies on hand as contained in the commissary shows a value of $53,000. It is said that the enrollment of girls this year is the largest for many years and they still come. There is a fine spirit at Chemawra, a continuation of last year. The many new students are taking hold finely. Mr. and Mrs. Councilor, little Jim, and Major Rob- lin took dinner with Superintendent and Mrs. Hall on Sunday. A pleasant reception was given by Mrs. Loos in the parlors of Mitchell Hall in honor of Mrs. Councilor on Monday evening. Mrs. Risser has been assigned the 7th grade room, with work under the departmental system, in the 10th, 9th, 8th and 7th grades. Major Roblin left on Monday evening for Round Valley, California, where he expects to install the new accounting system. Mrs. Ada B. Risser, who has been reinstated ar rived on Sunday evening. Mrs. Risser was one of the teachers at Chemawa last year. A hot water heating system is being constructed in the landscape gardener’s greenhouse by the plumbers. A like system will be put in the agricultural green house soon. A new sectional boiler has just been installed at the hospital and the occupants are certainly grateful for the generous heat afforded. Mr. Stewart did a quick and fine job. The slashing on the 30-acre lot which was cleared last winter and spring was burned not long since, thus enabling the entire tract to be sowed to grass and it is awaiting the fall rains to start the growth. A practice game of football between Chemawa and the crack players of Company M, who stopped off at Salem, was played on the Willamette College athletic grounds Saturday with the result of no score on either side. On account of the extra detail of girls in the sewing departments, together with the necessity of making so many garments for a large number of new girls, has made it essential to requisition the sewing machines in other departments. The first indoor athletic demonstration, composed of all sorts of aesthetic dancing and various stunts on part of the physical culture classes, was given in the gym last Wednesday evening. It was a very enjoy able affair and well conducted by Director E. A. Smith. The visitors, including the accounting officials and clerks, were much interested. The Superintendent read a letter in chapel on Sun day evening from Joe Gale, Sergeant, 10th Aero Squad ron, now located at Rautaul, Illinois, This letter was filled with fine thoughts and could not help but in spire our students to high aims. Joe was a good student, reliable, willing and pleasant, and always took advantage of the good things at Chemawa. The letter also contains the news that Ceorge Peters, an other Chemawa boy and a good one, is with the Royal Flying Corps in Canada. Details for the next five weeks were read on Sun day. Great care has been taken in preparing these details to comply with the Course of Study. Those whose turn happens to come for work in the difficult departments should do their work pleasantly and well, for that is their “ job” for the next five weeks and each one detailed has a duty to perform for the school as well as for himself and it is expected they will attend to their work, without continual pushing, encouragement and supervision.
