Mr. M. Peterson was a visitor at Chemawa last week.
He met many of his old friends here.
William Metcalf returned to school last week and is
now working in the engineering department. He is a
vocational draftsman and a teacher to the prevocation-
alists.
Chemawa is not at all idle these days and is conserv­
ing all its facilities, looking forward to the raising of
food stuffs in anticipation of a world-wide shortage
another year.
Dr. Fulkerson paid a visit to his wife and son at
Chemawa last Thursday. He was called to Portland
on business and could not pass up his many good
friends at Chemawa.
The girls are every bit as busy as the boys. This
is noticed all about the compus, in the school building,
and in the gym. They are right up and a-coming all
the time. Wake up boys, you may be passed!
Russell Adams is unusually busy nowadays. All
his spare time is taken up in the carpenter shop in the
manufacture of scenery for the Alumni show, which
show is expected to be sometime in the near future.
It is noticed that the farm and garden forces are
plowing up many pieces of land in various parts of the
school campus, which will be planted in beans and po­
tatoes. This land has never been cultivated before.
The shoe shop is always an interesting place to visit.
The workmen have plenty to do at all times and it
seems hard for them to keep up with the repairing.
This is due to the fact that they have a large student
body to keep them busy.
CONGRATULATIONS
SALEM, Ore., Monday. April 9.—Twelve students
from the Chemawa Indian School today are members
of the United States Navy, having enlisted at the re­
cruiting office here. Three enlisted as firemen and the
others are musicians.
The above clipping pleases me so much that I de­
sire through you to offer congratulations to the 12 brave
and loyal young men that so promptly responded to the
call in defense of our glorious Stars and Stripes. My
interest in the red brothers is earnest and long stand­
ing, as my father, Col. A. B. Meacham, from early
boyhood and up to the day of his death was devoted
in the interest and promotion of his red brother.
Father was Superintendent of Indian Affairs under
President Grant and at the time of his death was pub­
lishing a paper known as The Council Fire in exclusive
interest of the Indian.
May the “ loyal dozen” meet with the success and
honor deserved, returning to their homes without one
missing, is my earnest hope and prayer.

Supt. Hall of our school received the above com­
munication a few days ago and turned it over to us—
we find it so “ hearty” that we are proud to give it
publicity. Supt. Hall appreciates to the fullest the
