well on a d airy farm in Roy, M ontana, an d expects to

T h e young men of the n in th grad e w ould be glad
to accept an invitation to test the dom estic science cook­
in g at a meal given to them any “ old tim e .”
Mr. S tew art and his plum bing boys w ere en tertain ed
at the dom estic science b u ild in g last w eek. T h ey p u t
in two bath tu b s and a few statio n ary w ash bowls.
T h e p artitio n taken out of th e east end of th e old
audito riu m will be replaced now th a t th e new a u d i­
torium is com pleted, th u s g iv in g th e 9th g rad e a b etter
class room .
M r. Brown and his force of boys have m ade a few
im provem ents on the in terio r of th e C atholic ch u rch .
T h ey restained all th e seats and oiled the floor, w hich
was appreciated greatly by F a th e r G all.
T h e rough ground betw een th e blacksm ith shop and
gym nasium has been broken u p an d will be leveled.
T h e first crop will be potatoes and th en a law n later.

hand.
Law rence T aylor, an ex -en g in eer, who is now a vo­
cational carpenter, was found in th e engine room last
week rep airin g the old clock, w hich has faith fu lly
served its “ tim e” in th at d ep artm en t and req u ired
fixing.
M r. T ow ner, an old friend of m any of th e stu d en ts,
paid a visit to his son Elw ood last w eek. H e was
pleased to find his son doing so well at th e Salem H ig h
School. M r. T ow ner is alw ays a welcome visitor at
Chemaw’a.
T h e new’ force of carp en ters have been busy for a
day or so of last week in fro n t of th eir d ep artm en t
spad in g th e law ns, w hich were badly in need of it in
m any spots. T h e carp en ters are going to live up to
th e stan d ard .
T h e C rochet Club held its weekly m eeting in Miss
S k ip to n ’s q u arters on W ednesday evening. A short
program was had, w hich was followed by delicious
refreshm ents. T h e evening was well sp en t and e n ­
joyed by a ll.
T h e baseball team has been very u n fo rtu n a te of late
in seeking tim e to practice, w’hich was due to th e wet
w eather. T h e w hole school is back of th e team and
is anxious to see the boys out on th e field for th eir
reg u lar w orkout.
Miss S kipton has been kept busy of late receiving
sm all boys wdio keep her in w ild flow’ers, w hich
pleases her very m uch. T h e flow’ers are p u t on the
tables in the stu d e n ts’ d in in g ro o m and are appreciated
g reatly by the stu d en ts.
T h e Cbem aw a Y. W .C . A. w’as represented at the
conference in E ugene, O regon, by five delegates.
T h e g irls rep o rt th a t they had a fine trip and all re ­
ceived a good deal of profit from th e conference.
T hey w ere gladly w elcom ed on th e ir re tu rn .
R eginald D ow nie, m anager of ath letics, has secured
th e best of cloth required in th e m anufacture of new
baseball suits for the ’varsity team from an athletic
o u tfittin g com pany in Salem . I t is hoped th a t the
su its will be m ade for th e first gam e of the season.
T hey are w’ell u nder way now at th e tailoring d e p a rt­
m ent, u nder the supervision of M r. M cLean.
T h e E xcelsior boys w’ho w’ere elected to stu d y for
th e sp elling contest w hich falls due on T h u rsd ay , are
g iv in g th eir best atten tio n to th e ir spelling books,
w’hich represents th e good old society sp irit. I t is
certain th a t th e boys will p u t u p a good contest.
E v ery pupil and em ployee is w’elcome to be present
and th e societies all assure you an enjoyable evening.

Rov F razier of the seventh grade, won a picture as
first prize in a contest in arith m etic.

feren t k in d s of diseases of p la n ts and trees.

tain .

ditches.
W ith a ra tin g of 95 per cent each, P eter H atch and
Effie Davis led th e seventh g rad e d u rin g th e m onth of
M arch.
H a rrie t V erney, a vocational n u rse, is filling th e
vacancy in th e d ru g room caused by G ertru d e M ar­
shall leaving.
T h e seventh grade consider them selves fo rtu n ate to
have W illiam W alters to lead them in th e ir songs w ith
his eup honium .

E lsie of Y dalpoti, C alifornia, s ta tin g th a t she is re ­
covering from her illness.
T heodore F ay as of P o rtlan d recen tly becam e a
m em ber of the 7th grade class, w here he is welcomed.
H e is a good n a tu re d chap and a good stu d en t.
T h e w ar has aroused g reat sp irit am ong th e boys,
and th ey seem to have th e vision of th e ir c o u n try ’s
call. T h e w ay drilling is progressing show s tru e
American blood.
