No one w ho has been allied w ith any kind of w ork, and especially school w ork, can doubt th e tru th of th e statem en t. B ut we are able to d istin g u ish two k in d s of criticism : F irst, th a t w hich is necessary to o u r im provem ent and prom pted by love for th e one criticized. T h is is the kind given you by yo u r te ach ers at Chem aw a and is one of th e th in g s you come to school to g et. T h e second kind is th a t w hich comes from a class w hich can n o t b etter be described th an by one v u lg ar w ord “ so reh e ad s.” All of us should have d ig n ity enough not ta let this k ind w orry us. No. 10 tried to tear dow n ra th e r th an to build and he has alw ays aim ed at th e goed things. T herefore, let him not in ju re the one w ho has done w hat he him self has failed to do, but com pete w ith him , strive to surpass him , and both will thereby be helped. R em em ber th is, you n g men and young w om en, boys and girls of th is school, in every case th e one who backbites, says m ean, c u ttin g th in g s about his associates, is indeed listed am ong th e failures of the w orld. H e cannot grow into stro n g , useful m atu rity , nor can he be of any satisfaction to him self or those about him . L IT E R A R Y SOCIETIES R eliance SA Y TH E H E L P F U L T H IN G W hen th ere is so m uch need in th e life of ev ery stu dent to cu ltivate a bigger, k in d lier, nobler n atu re , surely none can w aste one m om ent of tim e on th e p e tty occupation c f back b itin g . In no way can such an in dulg en ce be helpful. T o the one w ho says th e m ean th in g s of a fellow stu d en t, it is a su re d estro y er of th e good m aterial he has placed in th e fo u n d atio n of his ch aracter. T o th e one w ho is censured it is usually a check in his developm ent and a cause for m uch b itter feeling and heartache. T h is sp irit of b ack b itin g is not w idely prevalent am ong the C hem aw a stu d en ts, but it is an enem y th a t m u st be curbed in th e very b eg in n in g . U n fo rtu n ately it is often used upon those boys and girls who are capable and try to give th e ir best w henever th ey are called upon. W hile they are try in g to b uild for th e m selves and th eir school, o th ers are try in g to pull dow n. Do those destroyers appreciate the fact th a t th ey are doing a three-fold injury? T h ey h in d er a fellow- stu d e n t, they keep back th e good resu lts th a t m ig h t be gained for th e school, and w orst of all, they poison th e ir ow n h earts and m inds. If they could but see how little, how babyish it is and how it reveals the coarser, com m on elem ent of th e ir n atu re, certain ly none would reso rt to such m eanness. T h e desire to say c u ttin g th in g s of an o th er who excels is aroused by o n e’s ow n in ab ility to do. W hose fault is it th a t he is not able? In m ost cases the responsibility falls upon th e individual him self; he has failed to m ake use of his o p p o rtu n ities; m ore th an likev he has alw ays T h e Reliance L iterary Society m et as usual W ednes day last. W hile the program was not carried out in detail as originally planned the num bers were well rendered and pleasing. O ur g uest, Mrs. S torm , fa vored us w ith a few en co u rag in g rem arks. T h e m ost pleasing feature of th e evening was the renew ed in terest and loyalty w hich seemed to perm eate th e w hole organ izatio n, several offering volunteer services.
