OLD STU D EN TS WELCOME TO THE N E W
On S atu rd ay evening, th e 30th, our old stu d en ts
gave a ro u sin g w elcome to our new com ers in th e form
of an inform al social in th e gy m n asiu m . E ach old
stu d e n t was sponser to a new stu d e n t and p u t forth
every effort to see th a t th e ir “ sp o n serettes” becam e
acquainted and had p artn e rs for every num ber. It
was g ra tify in g to see how the girls unselfishly tu rn ed
over th eir p artn ers to th eir charges.
S andw iches, coffee and ice-cream cones w ere sold
by the ath letic association and before the ev ening was
over ev e ry th in g was “ sold o u t.” Both th e old and
new stu d e n ts expressed them selves as en jo y in g the
evening g reatly . O ur m onthly socials in th e g y m n a­
sium are eagerly looked forw ard to by C hem aw a
pupils.

full to overflow ing w ith good hay for our 17 head of
horses as well as th e herd of dairy stock. T h ere are
over 2,000 bushels of splendid oats in th e bins also,
all grow n and harvested on the school ran ch .
A bout 165 of th e C hem aw a boys and girls w ere out
from the school d u rin g a portion of Septem ber, p ic k ­
ing hops and thereby earn in g not a little sum of m oney
for th e ir personal use d u rin g the year. H o p p ick in g
is a custom on part of th e stu d en ts w hich com m enced
m any vears ago. It enables th e pupils to secure an
o u tin g and earn needed m oney at the sam e tim e. M r.
Ja q u in s accom panied th e boys to the Jo n e s’ hop y ard ,
w here a cam p was established, and had charge of the
w ork as well as acting as disciplinarian and care ta k er
of the boys w hile th ere. T he girls slept at the school
and w ent to and fro each day. H oppicking tim e is
alw ays eagerly looked forw ard to by th e pupils. Mrs.
P erkins chaperoned the girls.
F lorence E indell of G lacier P ark , M ontana, has e n ­
tered th e C apital B usiness College in Salem .
P lans are being m ade to com m ence rehearsals soon
for the T h a n k sg iv in g program . Miles S tan d ish will
be presented.
M rs. T eabo, w ho has charge of th e school bakery
and one of C h en iaw a’s valued em ployes, is a g r a d u ­
ate of th is school.
O utlin es are being p rin ted in a ttra ctiv e book form
for use of pupils and in stru cto rs in both academ ic and
in d u stria l d ep artm en ts.
M rs. K atie C u n n in g h am , nee K atie E aB onte, who
g rad u ated at C hem aw a in 1899, enrolled her d au g h ter
C ath erin e th e o th er day.
