Maybe our fru it and orchard m an, Mr. W estley, is ahead of us and a l­
ready at the w ork. T h is w ould be ju st like him!
Mr. G ooduough, w ell-know n pianist of P ortland, is still com ing to
Chem awa to in stru ct his class sem i-m onthly. W e feel grateful to have
so em inent a m usician available for the in struction of our people in
th eir efforts to advance them selves in m usic.
O ur enterp risin g m erchant, Mr. R. G. H enderson, has purchased an
autom obile— a Ford —and according to reports will extend his business by
jobbing th ro u g h o u t the co u n try . T h is looks to us like a good move on
his part. H e is having a garage fitted up ju st a short distance south of
his store.
D uring the past m onth we had q uite a bit of ice-skating at the school.
T he pond ju st south of th e barns was the place w here th e sports were
held. It was lots of fun, b u t finally the ice got rotten and a few
youngsters broke th ro u g h and got good d u ck in g s—but no-one suffered
in any way from their experiences, we are glad to state.
On th e evening of Jan u ary 31st S u p t. W adsw orth called a m eeting of
all em ployes for the purpose of discussing various m atters w hich will
have to be met in establishing th e new course of stu d y at Chem aw a as
outlined by the Indian D epartm ent for the schools of the service.
M uch interest was m anifested d u rin g the m eeting.
T his year there will again be a series of in stitu tes for Indian service
em ployes held at m any of the schools. T he schedule is as follows:
H askell, Law rence, K ansas, Ju n e 19 to Ju ly 1; S anta Fe, Santa Fe,
New M exico, Ju ly 3 to July 15; S herm an, Riverside, Calif., Ju ly 17 to
July 29; Salem School, Chem aw a, O regon, Ju ly 31 to A ugust 12; Tom ah,
T om ah. W isconsin, July 31 to A u g u st 12; Rapid C ity, Rapid City. S. D.,
A ug. 14 to A ug. 26; Carlisle, Carlisle, P a., A ug. 14 to A u g . 26.
A fter service at Chem aw a of six years d u ratio n , Dr. C. I). Fulkerson
departed on Jan . 31st for W arm spring A gency, O regon, to w hich place
he had accepted a transfer. A couple of evenings before his d ep artu re
a large num ber of em ployes called at the ap artm en ts of the Doctor and
Mrs. Fulkerson and passed a most pleasant evening— a farewell testi­
monial for the doctor, as Mrs. F ulkerson and son, D onald, are to re ­
main here for th e present. A most pleasant evening was passed and
delicious refreshm ents were served the guests. Despite the inclem ency
of the w eather a good-sized delegation of w ell-w ishers were at the d e ­
pot to speed the Doctor on his wav w hen he took his d ep artu re. H e
took w ith him only good w ishes for his success in his new field.
