20 THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN Superintendent C. M. Buchanan, in charge of Tulalip Reservation, has been interesting himself for a year in an endeavor to land the coveted prize for Steve as a student whose school work made a fine showing. . With the scolarship goes tuition in the Mercersburg Academy in Penn sylvania; after completing that course he will, in two years, enter Princeton and study law. He is a graduate of the Marysville High School and has attended the reservation boarding school. The entire student body is looking foward to a very busy season in the gymnasium. The home-made chest weights, of which there are eleven, have made a good impression. They were made in the blacksmithing department under the direction of Mr. E. A. Smith, the writer of this article. Eight more weight machines, ten dozen pairs of Indian clubs? ten dozen pairs of dumbbells, ten dozen winds, springboard,, horizontal bar. and late-improved parallel bars are due to arrive from St. Louis, Mo. With the installation of this new equipment, together with what we now have traveling rings, flying rings, climbing ropes, horizontal lad der, horse buck, vaulting horse, volley ball courts and indoor baseball our gym will be equipped to carry on a fine course of training. The early season will consist largely of games, calisthenics and body building, in which the chest weight machines will play an important part, and of light work on the apparatus. The enthusiasm on the part of the boys proves this to be a step in the right direction. Quite a large number have bought white duck pants, white gym shoes, and white sleeveless jerseys to wear in their gym nastic work. We hope that a great many more will follow their example.
