Chem aw a has enjoyed some real, live, spelling m atches since o u r last
issue. T h e greater th e interest in m atters of th is kind the better.
Lincoln Day, A pril 15th, was fittingly observed at Chem aw a. In
the evening the band played a fine program of m usic suited to th e
occasion.
Straw berries are obtainable once m ore, for w hich we are th an k fu l.
I t is too bad th a t the straw berry season is sh o rt, b u t th is is made up for
by prunes— they are here forever.
A bout the m iddle of last m onth Miss Brewer and Miss W h ite w ent to
P ortland and attended preform ances by the Lam bardi O pera C om pany
of “ 111 T ro v ato re” and “ La T ra v ia ta .”
Chem aw a com bined w ith W illam ette U niversity in a field meet against
O. A . C. on April 30, the contest being held in Salem. O. A. C. beat
all contestants so far th a t we refuse to say an y th in g farther.
N ot long ago Mr. Loos had a b irth d ay anniversary and the small
boys’ band made th e occasion m em orable bv serenading him . T h e
music and the sp irit of the boys made quite an im pression upon th eir
in stru cto r.
On A pril 30th Mr. Loos and his band played for a school picnic near
Q uinaby. Every m em ber of th e band had a fine tim e and th e tre a t­
m ent accorded them certifies to the fact th a t they were all appreciated
for th e splended music rendered.

the class m o tto ,— “ N ot for self, b u t for o th e rs,” — the H am pton Senior
T radesm en recently received th e public in the w ell-equipped A rm strong-
Slater Memorial T rad e School and explained to h u n d red s of visitors
some of the details of th e ir shop problem s. T he results of w ork done
w ith the trained hand and m ind received warm public com m endation.
