BRIEF SUMMING UP BY ROBERT SERVICE
On the thirteenth of February the Stilettos of Portland came up here
without a defeat and we where expecting to be downed by this strong
aggregation, but to our surprise we defeated them by the score of 40 to
17. Although our boys were not expected to win, we were sure of giv
ing them a good game, therefore, according to the score we gave them
too good a game for their fancy, but to ours it was fine. Jim and
Hauser at forward were the features of the game, and Service at center
showed up fine, while McDonald and Chamberlin, our guards, were on
the job throughout the game. Chief Keck, the ex-O. A. C. star, was
at his best for the Stilettos.
On February the 18th Willamette came to Chemawa and was defeated
by the score of 31 to 18. - The game was fast and a little rough at times.
Our boys weathered the storm well as you can see by the score. The
fast passing and good basket shooting of our team was too much for the ,
University boys. Downie, who had been out of the game for some
time, showed up well for what little practice he had. Willamette and
Chemawa were rivals for the past twenty years and so the game was a
fight to the finish. This is the first time for the past ten years that
Chemawa has been able to befeat Willamette in basketball, so we have
something to be proud of. Our boys all played well and it would not
be fair to give the credit to any individual' player.
Our old Willamette Valley rival, McMinnville, came over on the 26th
of February and defeated Chemawa 36 to 21. The game was not as bad
as the score. Our boys were not so lucky at basket shooting as they were
in the past few games, and were somewhat handicapped with Hauser
and McDonald out of the game. This being the last game of our season
our team lost interest in the game. Jim and Downie starred for the
home team, while Irish and Black were McMinnville's best.
Baseball was started on the 8th of March and about thirty candidates
turned out. Coach Hauser thinks he will have a first-class team this
year. Downie, J. Adams, R. Adams, Jim and R. Service, are the old
members on the team, while, W. Service, Cottenware, McClusky and
James are promising new material. The absence of I,ane, McDonald,
Walker, Sanders, and Crawford will be missed some. Russel Adams
was the newly elected captain of the nine, and with his leadership we
will have a fine team.
Candidates are being called for the track team and are responding as
usual. Jim, Johnson, Dicks, R. Service, Eader, Chamberlain Colby, W.
Service and R. Adams are the old members and the prospects for new
material looks promising.
