42 THE CHEMAWA AMERICAN and expected to show real class in baseball, but Dick Adams had every thing at his command and soon had the game safe. In this game Lane, the sturdy catcher, was the first man up, and swatted the ball for a home run. By size he is the smallest man on the team; at bat he is the Hans Wagner of the National League. Adams was in fine fettle; the heavy batters on the visiting team could not locate the ball and were sent home with a ten to one defeat. May 9th we meet and defeated the McMinnville College team 8 to 7. Victory came at the close of nine innings of good fast playing by both teams. The Mack men were in the game from start to finish, and Che- mawa had to extend herself to stave off defeat. McDonald was hit quite freely at the close of the game, while the same is true of the College twirler. May first Chemawa ran away from Willamette in the annual track and field meet by a 62 to 58 score. The following is taken from the Salem Statesman: The track meet pulled off on the Willamette field in the afternoon following the coronation exercises resulted in the defeat for the Wil lamette team. Chemawa taking best honors by a 62 to 58score. The meet was characterized by some unusually good time, the 100 yard being won by Small, of Willamette in ten flat, the half by Jim, of Chemawa in 2 minutes 9 seconds, and the half mile relay by Willamette in 1:38. Axley of Willamette made a distance of 20 feet, 9 inches in the broad jump and Steeves, also of Willamette, made a height of 5 feet 6 inches in the high jump, Following are the events with those winning places: Hundred yard dash—Small, W., 1st; Sellew, C., 2d; Johnson, C., 3d; time, 10 seconds. Mile—Jim, C., 1st; Gangre, C., 2d; Chapler, W., 3d; time, 4:45. 220 low hurdles—Mills, W., 1st; Homan, W., 2d; time 29 seconds. Pole vault—Service, C., and Doan, W., tied for first; Dick, C., 3d; height 10-6. 220 yard dash—Small, W., 1st; Sel lew, C., 2d; Shisler, W., 3d; time 25:4. Broad jump—Axley, W., 1st; Homan, W., and Adams, C., tied for third. Javelin throw—Rader, C., 1st; Bain, W., 2d; Paff, W., 3d; distance 153 feet. 120 high hur dles—Chamberlain, C., 1st; Service, C., 2d; time, 18 seconds. Shot put—Rader, C., 1st; Patrovich, C., 2d; Gangre, C., 3d; distance 37 ft. High jump—Steeves, W., 1st; Adams, W., 2d; Mills, W., 3d; height 5-6. Half-mile—Jim, C., 1st; Chapler, W., 2d; Martin, C., 3d; time 2-9. Discus—Pfaff, W., 1st; Rader, C., 2d; Patrovich, C., 2d; dis tance, 98 feet. Half mile relay won by Willamette, time, 1:38.
