W alter S. Boyer, a representative of the general land office of W a sh ­
ington, D. C., has been doing special work in this vicinity recently and
made Chem aw a his tem porary h ead q u arters. Mr. B oyer’s main office
is in Spokane, W ash in g to n . Mr. Boyer is a real ten n is “ fiend” and
w ith him there is no such th in g as “ too m uch te n n is .” O ur most d a r­
ing racquet w ielders had to look to th eir laurels w hen he was here.

T h e present outlook for a s tro n g te a m is very encouraging. T h e new
men on the team are show ing up well for th e early season. W ith care­
ful coaching, th e first eleven will soon be playing good football. T h e
old m en are back in th eir regular form . Of these, Downie, W alker, E der,
Scowlole, and Peratrovich are in every play; how ever, they are a little
w eak on tack lin g . T h e new m en, N ix, Johnson, Billev, Y. A dam s,
H obucket, and J. Scott, are doing very good w ork.
T h e gam e w ith Salem H ig h, O ct. 11, was very encouraging and
showed the weaker points. T h e score, 22 to 6, in our favor, will tell th e
story.
A lth o u g h C liem aw a’s first score came on a fum ble by Salem,
N ix , th e big tackle, took th e ball out of a mass and ran forty yards for
th e first score of th e day. In the first half both team s played loose foot­
ball and held each other even. In the second half Chem awa cam e back
full of fight and fire, F ields tak in g Jo h n so n ’s place at rig h t g u ard . T h e
team s contested every foot of ground and both team s w ere determ ined
to w in. T h e crowd in the stan d s w ere treated to some real football.
Downie dropped a p retty field goal from the th irty -y ard line. T hen
W alker, E der and Scowlole w ent around the ends and plunged th ro u g h
the tackles, W alker and E der scoring touch dow ns, giving th e hom e
team a clean-cut victory.
T h is week will brin g the hardest gam e of the season, w hen we line up
against W illam ette. T h e U niversity is not as stro n g as they were last
year, w hile Chem aw a seems better th a n last year. T h is gam e will b rin g
out some good football, w hich will be well w orth the price of adm ission.
