T h e girls have an o p p o rtu n ity , aside from courses in th e academic
d epartm en t, to stu d y dressm aking, dom estic science, and ev ery th in g in
th e way of cooking and housekeeping; n u rsin g , too, is a branch of
study in w hich our girls excell and it is a very popular course w ith
them . All of those features w hich tend to fit girls for fu tu re usefulness,
and w hich insure hom e-m aking qualifications, are here for the asking.
All of the th in g s w hich we have m entioned are tr u e —thousands who
have at one tim e been enrolled at Chem aw a will testify to th e tru th of
our assertions. T h in k them over.

T h at w hich affords rest and relaxation for one person m ight co n stitu te
service for an o th er— w hat may be recreation for one need not of neces­
sity provide recreation for another. It is necessary th at each one shall
have som ething provided (eith e r by him self or by an o th er) for his
am usem ent or recreation. W e all see the necessity of this, for if it
w ere not a necessity we would not have w ithin us the capacity to be
en tertain ed , am used or interested in the various phases of life by
w hich we are su rro u n d ed .
W ell and good! If it is g ran ted , and it should be, th a t recreation is a
real need, especially for y o ung people, the n ex t th in g to consider is
w hat shall co n stitu te our en tertain m en t. H aving settled upon our form
of recreation our consideration is the ways and means of controlling the
sam e and keeping all w ithin proper bounds. T h e m atter of control is
sim ply one of wisdom and is beneficial to all, so both old and young
should assist in keeping th eir recreation on m ost decorous lines.
H ere at C hem aw a we believe th a t we have solved the m atter of recre­
ation to the satisfaction and w ell-being of all. W e, y o ung and old, rec­
ognize the fact th a t the school at Chem aw a was established for th e ac­
com plishm ent of serious and w orthy ends. W e are doing all w ithin
our power to help ourselves and our school, and to ju stify the gov­
ernm ent in th e steps taken in our behalf. But we have our periods of
fun —lots of them .
W e have fine and orderly dances in the big gym nasium every F ri­
day n ig h t, at present. O ur societies of the academ ic d epartm ent are
also of in terest to all. W e have our society parties d u rin g the season.
W e have gam es of every kinds in th e way of athletics, each in its p ro p ­
er season. W e are a lot of good-natured b u t serious m inded people;
we know for w hat we are here and we are doing our very best, or
m ighty near it. But ju st the sam e we are having good tim es and lots
of fun in "d e a r old C hem aw a.’’
