It’s based on a John Updike novel and is directed by George Miller who did the “Mad Max” series. Jack Nichol son stars as the charming but weird rogue. He’s the wealthy stranger from New York who suddenly shows up and buys the old Lennox place. Nobody can remember his name until they all do, at the same time. Darrel Van Horn. In fact, it’s the devil, come gliding into this wee New England town in a stretch Mercedes, accompanied by a raging storm. Jack/Darrel makes his entrance out of a collapsed folding chair and a broken snore into Eastwick society. The local string quartet is bowing out of its concert, having battled the snore through the last passage. Nicholson, Darrel the devil, rises from the wreckage of his nap and strides down the aisle, all hair and face, clapping, “Bravo, Bravissi." He has one of the most mobile laces in the business. He does work with that face that other actors haven’t dreamed of yet. People tend not to take him too seriously, probably because he has so much fun. He is as hard-working as they come, though, and I don't think he does anything by accident. There’s a scene in this film where he’s in the middle of a rant, and out of sheer, frustrated fury he goes into a little, kicking pirouette that Charlie Chaplin would have loved. There are three female leads in the movie: Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer. They pretty much come in a package and it's penultimate womanhood. The roles are maybe a little pat but that doesn’t slow them down. Cher does her Cher bit: mane of hair, wardrobe, belly button, flounce. She also does some great work. This woman definitely belongs in film. She has a little one-tear, no dialogue piece during a seduction scene that’s a real grabber. Michelle Pfeiffer is solid as a willowy, fecund blonde with a lap fill of towheaded kids. Susan Sarandon’s role is the introverted spinster-type turned free spirit. She pulls it off without a hitch. As the movie opens she’s in glasses and billowy clothing with her hair in a bun. Midway through she has a luscious scene in the market as a kind of sensuous, vivacious Or phan Annie. This film is a high-powered pro duction with great special effects (watch for the devil’s exit) and good everything: stuntwork, scenery, camerawork. No nudity, no gore—it’s R rated, probably because of the language. There’s a lot of sexual patter without the standard tasteful deception. Darrel the devil has come to town with seduction in mind after all. Picture Nicholson, in satin dressing gown, lolling on a four-poster. Can you dig Jack as Vamp? There’s also some subtle stuff around the fric tion created by female and male egos rubbing together. This latter, and the straightforward sexuality, are probably directly from Up dike’s novel. The Witches of Eastwick is basically entertainment sprinkled with some nice, little nuances and a lot of good acting. What you see is what you get.
