(9 “Dance Caribbean” features 3 bands Dance Caribbean brings Seattle’s steel drum band Bakra Bata, Cor vallis' Balafon and Eugene's Reggae All Stars together for a dance party at the Condon School Saturday, June 20. The dance is sponsored by and benefits the Caribe Arts and Cultural Club (CACC), a newly formed group dedicated to education. The CACC’s first project is to spon sor a steel drum class and workshop for children and the young at heart, which is currently scheduled to begin in mid-July. The classes will be of fered at no cost to the students. Work shops are also being planned in pain ting, drawing, poetry writing, and percussion. All the teachers are veterans at their skills. Teaching the steel drum classes will be Gordon Nurse who began playing the steel drum in Trinidad, Tobago at the age of 12. His 20-plus years of experience include playing with one of Trinidad’s major steel orchestras on tour in Costa Rica, Canada and America. Gordon has also played in steel orchestras in New York, Boston, and California. He is currently playing the steel drum with one of the leading Caribbean/Calyp so/Reggae bands in the area. The steel drum is used in many public school systems throughout North America and influences many forms of music including Jazz, Reg gae and R & B. The CACC is fortunate to have Patrick Ar nold, one of the modern innovators of the steel drum available to make drums for their first project. Thomas Connor studied piano, harpsichord, and the organ under Alan J. Sever, principal organist of the Manhattan School of Music from 1971 through 1978. He worked on a dou ble major of Piano and Business at the University of Hartford, and the Hart ford College of Music from 1978 to 1980. From 1981 to 1985 Thomas was an English/Philosophy major at the University of Minnesota, where he was involved in numerous theatre and art productions. Thomas, nicknamed Tye, is well versed in Blues/Rock harmony, The focus of his teaching will be the fundamentals of Jazz/Blues impro visation. He will also be available for some classical teachings. The dance music begins at 8 pm. Donations are $5, children under 12 are free. There will be a limbo con test, door prizes and a steel drum raffle.
