For information on advertising rates, call 484-0519. ■RADIO New on KLCC Sundays with Susan Starnberg Susan Starnberg wants you to spend Sunday mornings with her. “We’ll have a piano live in the studio and maybe a bass,” says Stam berg. “But, we’ll go about our business quietly, peacefully. Maybe you’ll listen over your Sunday paper. We want you to hear the coffee brew ing.” Weekend Edition with Susan Stam berg debuts on National Public Radio member station KLCC 89.7 FM on January 18 at 6 am. Hosted by NPR’s Susan Starnberg, for 14 years the co-host of All Things Considered, the two-hour Sunday morning program completes the sys tem’s goal of providing a news pre sence on public radio seven mornings and seven afternoons a week. Sunday morning Weekend Edition with Susan Starnberg, like its Satur day morning counterpart with Scott Simon, will be about the American weekend. But Starnberg says, “If Saturday is a day to run out and do errands, Sunday is a day to rest. “On Sunday mornings, we hope you’ll keep the radio going like your pot of coffee. We want to be a plea sant and informative companion. Nothing too intense. Cook your breakfast to us, go about your Sun day routine . . . we’ll spend the mor ning with you.” During the course of any given pro gram, Starnberg expects to talk with students, teachers, writers, musicians, mothers, fathers, newsmakers, film makers, critics, thinkers, travellers, collectors, cooks, car mechanics, religious leaders, and fed followers. Weekend Edition on Sunday morn ing, says Starnberg, “will combine the style and substance of the New York Times ‘Arts & Leisure’ section with the intimacy and spontaneity of the old Arthur Godfrey Show. Informa tive, newsy, a little off-beat, a little spontaneous. “This program will put an ear to the future,” says Starnberg. “It will be about work in progress. You’ll be in on things as they develop rather than after they’re completed. We'll hear the symphony in rehearsal, not perform ance; talk to the director as he shoots his movie, not once it’s in the theater; and hear readings from the new novel as the author rips Chapter Two from the typewriter. “Expect live music, listener parti cipation, and a small group of week ly regulars engaged in lively, intelli gent conversation.” Starnberg is the winner of many major awards in broadcast journalism. She is the first woman to anchor a na tional nightly news program in the United States. In her 14 years on NPR’s All Things Considered, she became one of public radio’s most respected journalists. Starnberg is ready for the challenge of Sunday mornings. She says she is ready for a new beginning. A relax ed new beginning. Time to consider a few things instead of all things.
