BUSINESS BRIEFS Homemade Beer/Wine Tasting The Home Fermenter Center is hosting an Open House/Beer and Wine Tasting at their store this weekend. They will be offering tasting samples of homemade beers, wines, a liqueur, and soda pop—all made at home. Members of the Cascade Brewers Society will demonstrate beer and winemaking, and all items in the store will be marked down 10% during the event. The Home Fermenter Center is stocked entirely with equipment and supplies needed for making beer and wine at home. The store is located on the corner of 1st and Monroe. The Open House will take place on Friday evenings, from 5-8 pm, and on Saturday, from 10 am-5 pm. The event is free, and everyone is welcome. Eugene Animal Hospital Relocated The Eugene Animal Hospital has moved to a new location at 1432 Or chard St. in Eugene, offering the same comprehensive veterinary care for small animals as they did at their previous location at 1399 Franklin Blvd. In addition to a full-service hospital facility, Drs. Rena Cowan and Priscilla Taylor continue to offer a spay and neuter clinic at their new address. Good Food plus Entertainment at Factory The Factory Restaurant and Edison's Bar, located at 4740 Main in Springfield, is more than just a restaurant. They are the first in the area to offer live professional comedy, featuring nationally known acts, on Mondays beginning at 8:30 pm. The Factory also offers an over-sized Big Screen, showing all major sporting events, and video dancing to recorded music Thursdays through Saturdays. There are also facilities with audio-video equipment ideal for meetings or trainings, and ban quet facilities for groups from 8 to 80. The restaurant offers an array of Italian specialties as well as steaks and seafood. On Wednesdays, all-you-can-eat spaghetti is $4.50; on Fri day and Saturday nights, Prime Rib Dinners are $7.95. Johan's Stops Delivering/ Keeps Baking Johan's Bakery has announced that they will stop delivering their breads to local stores—you may have already noticed! At the same time, they are concentrating their efforts on expanding and improving their present retail location, where you can continue to pick up your favorite variety of Johan's bread, along with other freshly baked goodies. Johan's is located at Blair and Van Buren Streets in Eugene. Women at the Top The impact of women in key political and administrative posi tions in the state of Oregon is on the rise. To celebrate the growth of positive power for women in our state, the Lane Women's Po litical Caucus is holding a benefit which will honor three Women at the Top. Oregon Legislator Margaret Carter, Portland Police Chief Penny Harrington and Secretary of State Barbara Roberts will share their experi ences on May 31 at the Town Club on the ninth floor of the Citi zens Bank building from 5-8 pm. There will also be a show by "On the Edge," a well-known Eugene comedy troupe. Emmett Williams, a popular Eugene jazz pianist, will provide the musical entertain • ment. All three of the women guests merit a "first" attached to their names. Margaret Carter is the first black woman in history to be elected to the Oregon Legislature. Penny Harrington is the first woman to be appointed police chief in any major U.S. city. Bar bara Roberts is the first woman to be elected majority leader in the Oregon Legislature. In a relatively short period of time, each woman has made a substantial impact within the state. Margaret Carter was elected to the Oregon House of Repre sentatives to represent District 18, winning 80% of the vote during her first election campaign. She is on three house committees as well as the joint trade and economic development committee, the edu cation committee, and the human resources committee. (See article for more information.) investments in South Africa. She is listed in Who's Who Among Black Americans for 1985 and re ceived the 1985 Jeanette Rankin Award from the OWPC. Penny Harrington was appoint ed as an officer to the Portland Police Bureau in September of 1964. She carved the way for women by being the first woman in the department to be appointed to the positions of Sergeant, Lieu tenant and Captain. Harrington was appointed Port land Police Chief on January 24, 1985. She is past president of the Portland Police Command Offi cers' Association, former member of the board of directors of the International Women Police, cur rent member of the board of direc tors for the Institute for Mana gerial and Professional Women. She is also on the governor's special commission against violent crime. Barbara Roberts began her po litical activities as an unpaid lobbyist for handicapped chil dren. She was elected to the legis lature in 1981 and became major ity leader in 1983. In 1983 Roberts received the Mary Rieke award from the OWPC and in 1984, the Distin guished Service Award from the Oregon Commission for the Handicapped. She currently holds Oregon's second highest govern mental office, Secretary of State. On the Edge will give a full per formance after the guests share their experiences. Emmett Wil liams will provide jazz piano en tertainment during the event. All interested men and women are in vited to join the celebration. Hors d'oeuvres and a no-host bar will be available. Tickets are $10 per person. If any person or couple is unable to afford the full price, pay according to ability. The Wom en's Political Caucus does not wish to limit access to any in terested party.
