It has value both before and after the run as well as for recovery from sore or injured muscles. The Eugene-Springfield area has a relatively large number of mas sage therapists. In addition, self massage of body, legs, arms and feet can be a part of needed stretching exercises both before and after a run. Many books on running now include information about massage. One of the best books on the subjects, with a definite "track capitol of the world" flavor, is now available at the Book Mark and soon at other book and run ning stores. Titled Athletic Mas sage, the book is jointly authored and prepared by Rich Phaigh, masseur for Eugene-based Ath letics West. Published by Simon and Schuster of New York, Ath letic Massage shows how massage can prevent and help heal muscle injuries and soreness as well as help you work out and compete at peak efficiency. Co-author is Paul Perry, Eugene writer, who is West Coast editor of American Health magazine and author of books and articles on running and health. The massage book is profusely illustrated with many story-telling photographs, with models Alber to Salazar and Mary Decker illus trating various basic massage techniques. Phaigh has won inter national reputation through his work with Athletics West, Decker and Salazar, as well as with many other AW runners. The book, however, is not just for runners but for many other athletes as well as just plain people. The price, $14.95. Your Best Race Running Your Best Race is the title of another just published book by Eugene author Joe Hen derson, the USA's most prolific writer on the subject of running. Henderson, a runner-writer who has run over 600 races in his rela tively young life, captures just about anything any new or vet eran runner might need to know for training and competing in road races, fun runs, half marathons and marathons. The book also provides the ultimate in informa tion for self coaching. An order blank at the end of the book gives reader-runners who own com puters an opportunity to order computer software for Apple or IBM personal computers. The "program diskette goes further than the book by allowing you to have an automated and person alized running program that plans, calculates, records and re views, and updates your running program." No price for the dis kette is listed in the new bok, but Henderson says the publisher plans to sell the book and disc for $18.95. Running Your Best Race costs $9.95 and is published by the Wm. C. Brown Publishing Co. of Du buque, Iowa, with the book pre face signed off by Joe Henderson in Eugene in July, 1984. By the way, Henerson says, "All serious racing is behind me, and I run [and occasionally still race] with specific goals. I'm a Stage Three runner who runs for the fun of running."
