Thir teen hours of each day are de voted to a sky of distant stars, with sunset occurring at the rela tively early time of 5:30 p.m. Ac cordingly, average nighttime lows drop to 42°, while the weakened sunlit highs reach only 64°. Yet, for all its coolness, this is a blessed season, when strik ingly colored days are followed by enhanced opportunities to read the scroll of night. One especially beautiful orna ment on that scroll is the nearby moon. It can be seen in the cra tered glory of its half-phase Fri day, October 14th. Accompany ing it to its far right will be the largest planet, Jupiter. This almost-star (which emits twice as much heat as it receives from the sun) appears bright white and far more conspicuous than any star in the sky. However, even - Jupiter is dwarfed in apparent luminosity by Venus, which pre cedes the sunrise in the east by two hours, rising at 4:30 a.m. Very near to brilliant Venus on its left is the glowing red planet Mars (also easily visible with the unaided eye) while close on its right is one of the brightest stars of night, Regulus. Such are some of the consolations of an insis tent early morning alarm clock! This Week’s Terrestrial Eye Opener (taken from the book.
