The University of Oregon and Northwest University in Xian, China, have agreed to establish an educational exchange program. Ten tatively set to begin in Sept, 1984, the program would send UO students to Xian to study Chinese language. and culture. Young in structors from Northwest University would come to Eugene to study in various fields. Cash donations from the public have enabled the Eugene Parks and Re creation Dept, to open and staff neighborhood wading pools located in several city parks. Fairmount Park wading pool, at 15th & Fair is open on Monday, mount, Wednesday and Friday from 11 am-4 pm through Aug 11. Washington Park Pool, 19th & Washington Sts, is open Monday and Thursday from 2-7 pm through Aug 8. Monroe Park Pool, 8th & Monroe, is open Tuesday and Thursday from 1-5 pm through Sept 1. Sladden Park Pool, N. Adams and Cheshire Sts, is open from 1-4 through Aug 11. Cash donations and volunteers to staff the wading pools are still needed to keep the pools open on additional days dur ing the week. The Oregon Lung Association is of fering a camp for boys and girls who have asthma. It was designed espe cially for children 9-13 who are af flicted by asthma. The camp in cludes 24-hour medical supervision, a well-trained staff and specially pre pared foods for campers with food allergies. Two camps are offered be ginning the first week at Camp Col ton, Colton, OR, July 31-Aug 6 and the second week will be held at Camp Lutherwood, Cheshire, OR, Aug 7-13. The cost is $85 per week. The Black Bag Project is comprised of a small group of people with a collection of health tools (blood pressure cuffs, speculum, otoscope), books and information. They are in terested in helping you to learn more about your body, to take control of your health and to promote com munity self-reliance. Right now the books and tools are stored in a closet and they are looking for ideas and inspiration from people who are in tersted in the self-care concept. They are holding a public meeting on Aug 2 at 7:30 pm in the Eugene Library. See calendar for details. Laurie Kovack will be Weaver-in Residence at the Campbell Senior Center Thursdays arid Fridays dur ing the month of August. Kovack, a weaver participating in the Lane Regional Arts Council’s Artists-in Education Program, will introduce class participants to the possibilities of the woven medium. Discussions involving contemporary, historical and cultural traditions of textiles will be combined with hands-on experi ences through all the stages of weav ing. The content of the workshop will be based on the interest and ex perience of participants. For more information call the Campbell Center at 687-5310. The Oregon State University Ex tension Service has plans available for two moderately priced passive solar homes designed specificually for the Pacific Northwest. One is a two-level 1,530 square, foot house featuring a solar greenhouse in which heating cost might be cut in half compared to a similar conven tional house in Eugene. The other is a 1,000 square foot house featuring direct heat gain through south facing windows. Heating costs might be cut two-thirds compared to a conven tional house. Catalogs describing the house plans are available without charge from the Lane County office of the OSU Extension Service. The catalogs also provide information on building sites, comparison of heating costs, design, starting a building project, and on ordering construction drawings. The plans and booklet were prepared for the Extension Service by Oregon Appro priate Technology in Eugene under contract with the U.S. Dept, of Energy. The Lane Regional Arts Council is providing a free service to help Lane County residents locate and hire visual and performing artists. The Find the Artists program uses infor mation provided directly by profes sional artists, and offers ideas and advice to persons interested in employing them. Find the Artists combines two ongoing Arts Council services. The Visual Artists Slide Bank contains slides of work created by local artists and craftspeople. The Performing Artists Referral Files highlight the talents of Lane Coun ty’s musicians, dancers, actors and circus performers. A summary of each artist’s training, experience, ex hibits or performances, reviews and fee range is provided. All artists have been interviewed by LRAC staff.
