Fifthpear Building — Mesnclons Eugene, Orgea,.15041993/6% "Le Medecin Malgre Lui, or, The Reluctant Doctor" Allan Gross, a director, producer and actor from New York who has made Eugene his home for the past several years, has joined forces with one of Eugene's more electic theatre companies, The NewMime Circus, to put together a production of Le Medecin Malgre Lui, or, The Reluctant Doctor by Moliere. It will be performed April 16, 22, and 23 in the Hult Center's Soreng Theatre, the first locally produced play designed specifically for that space. Le Medecin Malgre Lui is a 17th century French farce about a wood cutter who finds himself dubbed a doctor and is hurled into the midst of a family dispute, all of which, of course, ends happily. Moliere's script originated from comic interludes performed to amuse the King between performances of serious tragedies. Moliere based his comedic style in the playful "lazzi" (or bits") of commedia dell’arte theatre. Moliere extended these moments with his own comic improvisations, including various pranks and gimmicks, and wove it all into the script. This production, however, will add yet another layer to Moliere's play. It will be presented as a play-within-a-play. The actors will first be seen as a motley troupe of international performers who assemble in the Soreng Theatre to do a production of Moliere's farce. They discover that there have been organizational screw-ups (wrong per formance dates, actors not showing up, etc.) and that they will have to come to grips with these situations in the ensuing production. Gross, who is also directing this production, says the play will in clude elements of "mime, singing, dance, juggling, classic bits,' prat falls, straight acting, and comic acting. The company consists of many of the more prominent performers from On the Edge, The NewMime Circus and The Oregon Repertory Theatre. Included in the cast are Judith Barker Roberts, Carol Burger, Dan Bruno, Jerry Campbell, Grant Caster, Chris Dolman, Fax Goodlife, Janet McIntyre, Jim Pemble, and Ernesto Ravetto. The set was done by Steven Oshatz, lighting by Betty Sherman Hemmingsen, and costumes by Marcia Dalquist.
