Photo by Dave Kao Eugene Direct Action Eugene Direct Action is a group of citizens from the Eugene area con cerned with the proliferation of all first-strike nuclear weapons who plan to participate in a nonviolent direct-action protest at Vandenberg AFB on January 24. The ten people who will be risking arrest, and as many "support people," have all undergone one or more nonviolence training sessions. They plan to com mit nonviolent civil disobedience, probably by blocking one of the en trance gates to the base. Vandenberg is the site for this month's mass action because most of the new generation of first-strike nuclear weapons are being tested there. The first test launch of an MX **************** missile has been moved to some time in March. The missile will be fired at Kwajalein Atoll in the South Pacific, part of the Marshall Islands. The Marshall Islands are the largest atoll in the world, a chain of 90 small islands and a strategic trust territory of the U.S. where 66 nuclear bombs have been detonated since 1946, causing horrifying health problems.
