The Bat Die Fledermaus, Richard Strauss' "comic operetta of revenge," is Eugene Opera's second selection of the season. The nineteenth century ambience of the piece lends itself to elegant theatrical costumes. The centerpiece of the opera is a great ball. Since Strauss is the best known of all the dance music composers, the ball promises to be musically and visually delightful. Conductor Philip Bayles and Director Thomas Gressler are suported by a cast which includes resident artists Cherine Bauer and Virginia Hurivitz, Thomas Poole, James Terrell (a Portland Opera resident artist), Kristina Carlson, Paul Lash, Brian Sevingle, and Frank Graffee. Gene Dent designed the set and lights, Eugenian Kathy Freedman designed the costumes, and Eugene ballet performer Devorah Frates choreographed the opera. Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is a traditional New Year's Eve performance. It opens at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts Thursday, Dec 30 and plays again Friday, the 31st, at 8 pm. The opera is sung in English. "Sneak previews" by members of the Opera's cast will be performed Dec 27, 28 and 29 at the Metropol Cafe at noon. Further, a pre-show lecture on the storyline and musical history of the show will be given by Philip Bayles, Eugene opera's ar tistic director and conductor for Die Fledermaus.
