Hot Bagels "It’s kinda hard, like a roll, and you put lox and cream cheese on it," ex plains a lovely young Chinese woman. A small child figures it out: "They use a sort of cookie cutter thing . . . maybe." September 2 was the first public showing of "Hot Bagels—The Hole Story," an 11-minute educational video piece produced by Eugene’s Burma Road Productions. The show’s a delight ful mix blending kid’s humor, archival photographic material, local interiors shot inside Humble Bagel’s bakery, and some exterior shots done in Port land. Co-producers Jerry Joffe and Steve Christiansen produced, scripted, and edited the show; Jerry directed, Steve did the camera work. Loren Sears handled lights and sound; original music is Susan Kennedy’s. When Humble Bagel commissioned the piece last spring, Joffe and Christiansen basically moved into the bakery for three days. The night they videographed inside the oven, the automatic pre-heat system came on, and things got hot. Mostly Christiansen. who was in there with the camera. Joffe says they’d like to sell "Hot Bagels" to a national cable network like Calliope. When the new cable access community television channel comes on-line, maybe "Hot Bagels" will be shown to a larger audience. Burma Road will enter the show in educational film and video festivals around the country as well, and they will try to market it to school districts, libraries, com munity centers, and other educational institutions. As Joffe puts it: "We want it in every 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classroom in the country. ..." —Lois Wadsworth Radio Erskine Hawkins on Big Band Bash at 12 noon on KLCC 89.7 FM.
