AUGUST 1926 might in less time been in court as a defendant in a divorce action with a very sophisticated girl wife demanding as much as that monthly as alimoney, and property division besides. tute for walking. Havana’s motor vehicles are numbering 17,464, according to the city’s registration records, which indicates that modern ideas among the Cubans are coming along very nicely. The great American summer resort, the family automobile, which has been moving about the country on millions of wheels since early spring, is an institution that has given millions of people a more literal idea of the much emphasized part of the American creed—pursuit of happiness. They have chased it in flivvers and limousines along rivers and brooklets, on highways and trails, in the mountains and along the seashores. And now they are returning home, children and grandparents, with enough happiness in captivity— memories of glorious days, to last them till next spring. The grouch who is still sticking around at the old stand, kicking and complaining, ought to learn the lesson or “go jump in the lake.’’ Despite immigration restriction, the population of the United States is said to have increased by eight millions during the past five years. Page the man who said that the American people would die off were it not for the constant stream of immigrants coming in to offset our losses and make up the necessary increase. Turks in Constantinopole are now wearing straw hats instead of the peaked fez. Whether this is a sign of progress or not may not be stated positively but it would seem to be an unmistakable indication. The “Stop, look and listen” sign which has become so conspicuous at the railroad crossings, will presently be put to a new use if the suggestion of Judge Summerfield of Los Angeles meets with general approbation. The judge says that the most suitable place for such a sign is on the door to the marriage licence bureau. Well, why not? If the. suggestion could kindle a sobering second thought in the mind of some jazz-crazed and impulsive lad or lassie in the act of taking the wrong road to the state of marriage, then it should be placed on the door of every marriage licence bureau in the land. The Egyptians are furnishing John Bull something of a naughty child problem. With self-government under English protection, they should be able to prosper if it’s in them. Now they are getting flighty and show signs of un managable traits. They are evidently not so far removed from their ancient forebears who in the period between the fourth and the twelfth dynasties slaved away in the desert sands building seventy-five pyramids as tombs for their masters and kings. Freedom without any education to comprehend its values is evidently not altogether a blessing. “Thirty days” can rarely atone for mixing too much rum in the gas mixture. The effect is too much speed. A crash is the inevitable consequence. Remorse may be sobering, but it does not act long as a deterrent. There are the “next time” possibilities. It may be expensive to feed the rum gas-jazz crowd at public expense, but it is economy in the long run. Human life is rated too low when a killing on the public highway is punished with but “thirty days in jail,” if as much as that is meted out. Believing that the “elixir of youth” may be obtained from the California Redwood trees, an Oregon scientist is now said to be experimenting with the sap to determine whether it will prolong life. Scientists think that the discovery of a fossil of a five-toed horse is a more important event than the Birthj of Christ. They travel around the world to see a skeleton, but would not cross the street to save a soul —W. J. Bryan Some people think that a careful driver is one who toots his horn to let the locomotive engineer know that he is approaching the crossing. GREATNESS IS NORMAL Henri Frederic Amiel. Great men are the real men, the men in whom nature has been fortunate. They are not extraordinary — they are in the true order. It is the little men who are not what they ought to 'be. The plan is all right for some people, but an abomination for others. Worries over the “next installment” rob many people of the pleasure of their installment possessions. Failure to pay inevitably causes them to lose their partly-paid-for possessions without a chance to recover the money paid out. Many lives have in consequence been wrecked by the lure of the install ment plan. The gossip mongers are now engaged in besmirching the historic friendship between king Solomon and the queen of Sheba by alleging that the royal house of Abyssinia origi nates from an illigitimate son of king Solomon and the beautiful and talented queen of Sheba. That there is nothing in history so beautiful and elevated as to be immune from the vileness of the gossip mongers cannot be doubted. $2 Cash and $3 Monthly No Interest I I I | I | Double Day Beds, in pretty dark walnut finish with two decorative cane panels at each end. Use your credit If estimate’s are to be relied upon, one-fifth of the population of the United States attends the movies each day. If correct, then the amount of admissions in one single year will total approximately $906,000,000. This money may be well spent, but some people would be much better off if they saw less of some movie features than they do. Havana is rapidly taking up the modern American mode of locomotion.
