Page Six MARCH, 1925 THE UNITED AMERICAN in a large measure cured of these ancient traits of the cave-dwellers. The overthrow of existing governments has given no relief. Elements as base and as faithless as those that were overthrown have frequently' become the successors and the looked for improvements have been turned into disappointments in most places. * * * The restoration of faith and confidence, respect and good will, in the international relations among the world nations, offer the only possible relief. From this new angle of a new begining the world might create a new spiritual morale with every poten tiality for curing the moral decadence that is abroad in the world, a menace to civilized society. The first step in the right direction is to stop the war-lords from speaking for the nations in any and all matters of domestic and international dispute. Seasoned and sober minds are needed on the job to instill and inspire confidence and create a spirit of mutuality, and absolute and clean-cut justice. Whether this can be achieved in the present gener ation or must be looked for in the unspoiled Youth, ‘which eventually will have to deal with the problem, if still unsolved, is a subject widely discussed. In the last summer’s issue of “Youth,” Moya Jewitt writes : ....Since the war there has come forward a new David: the Youth of ithe world1, and they are pitting their courage and idealism against the efficiency and experience of the war Goliath.... Before these many and various Youth Movements there is the vision of a world at Peace.... what are thé methods by which they hope to attain this idea? What are they actually doing?.... They are arranging Peace Talks, Peace Conferences, Demonstrations, Visits, etc.,., but so far Goliath does not even know that he is challenged, let alone menaced in any way.... If David is going to slay Goliath, he must change his ways. He must face the race problem, the economic problem and the terrible ignorance of the peoples: and he must be as efficient as the War Office, as closely organized as an army, and as unsparing in his education and propaganda in the Press. Love and Brotherhood are true ideals, but one must combat knowledge with better knowledge, and efficiency with better efficiency. A direct argument against accepting the principle that the victor should make the law is set forth in an appeal for justice by the venerable peace champion Louis Guetant. Commenting on the Congress of Lyons he writes: Peace without justice and without liberty means slavery and death. The Peace Treaties.... must inevitably call forth revolt among the vanquished, but also among the victors, for it is just as humiliating to pretend to impose' on us profitable injustices as is to make us suffer under them.... Therefore we say that there can be no peace and no real economic and moral recovery as long as treaties based on violence such as the one of Versailles have not been revised by a delegation of the peoples, all accepting the principle that victory does not make law. Another sign of interest for peace and a better social order among the younger people of the world is seen in the Youth Associations of the “Black-Red-Gold National Banner” in Germany which are collecting young people of republican tendencies as a counter organization to the Radicals of the Right. In Leipzig alone this new organization has over one thousand members which will oppose the ¡movement of the Left to exploit the Youth of Germany of today for militarizing purposes.
