C O Wednesday, February 23, 2022 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon M M U N I T 3 Y Sisters filmmaker to debut in Texas festival PHOTO PROVIDED Neil Fendall has accepted a coaching position at Southern Oregon University. Coach moves back to college ranks By Charlie Kanzig Correspondent If there is such a thing as a <football family,= the Fendalls 4 Neil, Lynne, Taylor, Hannah, and Gracie 4 are it. Neil Fendall recently accepted the job as defen- sive coordinator and safe- ties coach for the Southern Oregon University Red Raiders (SOU) and is already on the job in Ashland. It is a return to the college ranks for Fendall. In speaking with The Nugget, Fendall first and foremost wanted to make clear that the rest of the fam- ily is not going anywhere. <I am going to be home weekends on the weeks that I need to be on-site in Ashland,= he said. <The rest of the family is staying put because of all the places we have ever lived, [this] is the place we consider home.= Taylor attends Linfield and plays football, Hannah is a junior at Sisters High School, and Gracie is in eighth grade at Sisters Middle School. Lynne works as the secretary to the superintendent at the district office. < C l e a r l y, w e a r e enmeshed in the Sisters community,= Neil said. Fendall, who coached football for five years in Sisters beginning in 2015 and most recently held the head position at the new Caldera High School in Bend, is no stranger to col- lege coaching. Following high school jobs in Grants Pass and Oregon City, Fendall coached at the col- lege level for a total of nine years, at Linfield and Cal Poly. The new job came about over time, according to Fendall. <This was not a quick decision,= he said. <I have known the head coach, Charlie Hall, there for many years and we have kept in touch, so when this opening came up he reached out to me.= With that said, Fendall knew it had to be the right opportunity for him to make the jump. <I wanted something that was a drivable distance from Sisters, with the right staff and some level of familiar- ity. We lived in southern Oregon before and the dis- tance is very manageable,= he said. <Plus, when I went down to interview, I got a really good feeling about the place, the players, and the other coaches, which sealed my decision. See FENDALL on page 18 <The Outside Circle: A Film of the Modern West= will have its world premier in <the best little documentary film festival in Texas= March 23-27. Thin Line Fest is in its 15th year in Denton, Texas. The Outside Circle depicts western artist Len Babb, a fifth-generation rancher, and a Paiute-Shoshone rodeo champion, all of whom are determined to preserve their heritage, traditions, and live- lihoods. The Outside Circle explores the common thread in their modest adherence to the values of faith, family, friends, and community. Writer Craig Rullman makes his directorial debut with the film. According to Rullman, the festival slot is a major step in getting wide distribution for the documentary, which was filmed in Paisley, Oregon, and in northern Nevada. Sam Pyke of Hill Shadow Pictures in Sisters is cinematographer on the film. Sisters filmmaker Cody Rheault also contrib- uted to the film. Local woman finds blessings during crisis By Katy Yoder Correspondent Tr a c y Ly n n L i s i u s (Hendrickson) is a Sisters res- ident, a mom, and 4 before her health declined 4 an employee with the U.S. Forest Service. She9s an example of what can happen when medi- cal issues deplete and eventu- ally decimate savings. Before her health wors- ened, she was living a full life. <I was trying to be my most healthy self, keeping fit and active. I worked full-time on fire incidents in Central Oregon,= she said. Now using a power chair and special upright walker, she only leaves home for doc- tor9s appointments. Her life has changed in many ways, but her attitude remains positive. <I still enjoy leaving my sparkle of hope with people. I like to smile a lot,= she said from the home she shares with her son and service dog, Lulu. Tracy Lynn has Ehlers- Danlos Syndrome (EDS), as well as a condition called dysautonomia. Because EDS is rare and has a complicated set of possible symptoms, she was misdiagnosed for most of her life. EDS is a syndrome often referred to as rare con- nective tissue disorder.
