Heuberger medals in State swimming Byline Charlie Kanzig Correspondent Clayten Heuberger brought home two medals from the OSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A cham- pionships held Saturday, February 19, at Tualatin Valley Swim Center, com- pleting a stellar season for the junior. Heuberger placed third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.86, which was 1.5 seconds faster than his seed time entering the meet. Akira Van de Groen of Catlin Gabel won the race in 53.83. In the 50-yard free, Heuberger kept pace in a very close race, setting a new per- sonal best of 22.86 to place fourth. The three seniors ahead of him, including the winner Carson Washburn of North Valley (21.78), all swam season bests. <Clayten had an outstand- ing day,= said Coach Alex Bick. Freshman Joe Souza nar- rowly missed a medal, finish- ing seventh with a tremendous improvement in the 100-yard breaststroke, lowering his time by nearly five full sec- onds, clocking 1:07.47 4a school record. <What a great experience for Joe,= said Bick. Catlin Gabel won the boys team title with 53 points, followed by Newport (39), St. Mary9s (36), and Madras (27), who took home the remaining trophies. Heuberger9s efforts totaled seven points, which placed Sisters in a tie for 11th among 17 scoring teams. The Huskies of Sweet Home added another top tro- phy to their collection, easily outdistancing the competi- tion with 87 points. Catlin Gabel (66), Newport (25), and Henley (18) rounded out the trophy winners. Coach Bick praised the efforts of his swimmers and expressed his thanks for the team9s support. <The kids have been great and we all want to thank Black Butte Ranch for the use of the Glaze Meadow pool,= he said. <There is no way we could have a team without their help.= <I was proud of how the boys finished the game in the fourth quarter,= added Rush. <That will hopefully give us something to build off of as we prepare for our remaining games of the season.= After three weeks on the road the Outlaws finally got to play on their home court on Friday, but were upended by top-ranked Cascade. The Cougars9 6-foot-11-inch and 6-foot-7-inch posts, along with their highly skilled perimeter players, were too much for the Outlaws to handle. Sisters started the game with competitive play behind some solid baskets from Adam Maddox-Castle. The Cougars9 big men got some easy shots and extended Cascade9s lead to eight points at the end of the first quarter. In the second period the teams played even. Sisters was only outscored by two, 11-9, in the period. The Cougars hit a three-pointer at the buzzer and at the half the Outlaws trailed 18-28. The Outlaws struggled offensively in the third. They put two points on the score- board off a lay-up by Ricky Huffman, and then Palanuk hit a long ball at the buzzer to give the Outlaws five points in the period. Sisters didn9t quit, buck- led down, played a good fourth quarter, and outscored the Cougars 15-11. Huffman had a solid quarter, scored four points, and played with hustle and energy. Scholl and Murillo also scored four 11 points each in the quarter. Huffman finished with eight points, Schwartz had seven, Noah Pittman con- tributed six, and Palanuk tal- lied five. Murillo and Scholl added four points each. Rush said, <I was pleased with how the team competed tonight against top-ranked Cascade. Playing against a team as talented and skilled as Cascade poses a chal- lenge, but our kids did a ter- rific job of fighting, scrap- ping, and making Cascade earn their points and final outcome.= The Outlaws were to wrap up league play at home against Woodburn on Tuesday, February 22.
