Wednesday, September 9, 2020 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y New trail connects users to PRT Thanks to the hard work of many volunteers, folks living west of Sisters can now access the Peterson Ridge Trail (PRT) system via the new PRT-Whychus Footbridge Tie Trail. Almost two miles of new trail connects the Elk Ranch Loop (from Edgington Road across from the Middle School) via the footbridge on the Brooks Scanlon Logging Road to the existing trail system. The new trail eliminates the need for residents of Tollgate, Crossroads and other areas to the west to ride or walk on city streets in order to access the Peterson Ridge trails. This connec- tor also allows mountain bike riders on the PRT to access the Metolius Windigo Connector to dramatically expand options to the south and west of town for cyclists. The new PRT-Whychus Footbridge Tie Trail is for hiking and mountain biking only. No motorized vehicles, e-bikes or equestrian use are allowed. Project <scoping= and approving new trail can be a lengthy process; this new section of trail was initially proposed almost six years ago and has been actively in the works for at least three years. Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) volunteers Gary Guttormsen and Patrick See NEW TRAIL on page 9 PHOTO BY JODI SCHNEIDER The Sisters Street Fair went forward under COVID-19-safe protocols last weekend. Local and regional crafters welcomed the opportunity to show their wares. Street fair adapts to COVID-19 rules Some students may go to school this month As COVID-19 cases in the region continue to drop, some Sisters students may be able to return to school in September. In a message to parents, Superintendent Curt Scholl said, <On September 8, we start comprehensive distance learning for all. We are target- ing September 28 as a return time for K-3, as we have been consistently meeting the met- rics set by Governor Brown to serve those students. If the metrics continue to improve, we are hopeful that we can include our 4th grade in this return on the 28th and all of our elementary students back to school under our reopen plan.= Middle and high school students can still expect six weeks in Comprehensive Distance Learning as the school year begins. <As we track our county and state metrics, we will continue to communicate See SCHOOL on page 30 By Jodi Schneider Correspondent People enjoyed the last days of summer in down- town Sisters on Labor Day weekend browsing through a variety of arts and crafts for the 13th annual Sisters Fall Street Festival held at Oak and Main Avenue. Vendors could operate by preparing and following a COVID-19 safety plan. Event Organizer Richard Esterman said, <I know about all the COVID-19 require- ments and we are following them. I was raised that if an obstacle is in front of you, you overcome it, and there9s nothing that you can9t over- come. We just move forward. We can still do events; let9s not all hide in the closet.= He added, <I fought really hard for this and found that events can be done with some extra creativity. I used common sense; I have one- way aisles with arrows, have sign-in sheets, sanitizer sta- tions, social distancing and mask signs throughout the event. <I9m showing that it can be done right, so other event promoters can say, 8Hey, we can do this.9= Robert Reyes, a regu- lar vendor at Esterman9s Central Oregon Shows, is enthusiastic to be back out- doors selling Bakke Brothers Jerky. Reyes said, <This is the first show I9ve done since the first of March. All my other gigs have been canceled. It9s been rough and I haven9t had any income other than a few online sales. I didn9t moni- tor it as much as the shows because normally we have samples for what we sell and now we can9t do that. This is a gourmet product. It9s not your average jerky that you buy in the grocery store. Most people want a sample to try it and see if they like it.= See STREET FAIR on page 30 As the COVID-19 crisis continues to affect gatherings, please contact individual organizations for current meeting status SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Al-Anon Mon., noon, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. / Thurs., 10 a.m., Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. 541-610-7383.
