4 Wednesday, October 31, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Obituaries Galen Kent Chong Boles Robert Petersen October 1, 1996 — October 15, 2018 April 8, 1934 — September 15, 2018 On October 15, our beloved son Galen made the choice to end his life. His parents Kent and Cara Boles, sisters Sarah Hansen and Hannah Boles, nephew Ryder Hansen and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends will greatly miss Galen and are grateful for all of the years of love and closeness they shared together. Galen was born at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene and moved to Sisters with his family in 2003 just before entering first grade. He attended Sisters schools through 2015 and earned his GED with honors. Many friends were made through- out the years, and Galen was known to reach out to students new to the area, making them feel com- fortable and immediately welcome. Self-nicknamed “Glorious Galen,” he loved glorious adventures with his family and friends. Those who knew Galen experi- enced a young man who was playful, gregarious, adven- turous, fun, loyal and family oriented. He was passionate about movies, video games (especially Rock Band), and was purposeful about spending time with his clos- est friends, the “Tala Tribe.” Galen had faith in Jesus Christ and was active in the young adult Bible study at Vast Church. Many of Galen’s cousins served in the military, and he had once dreamed of joining the armed forces himself. In middle school, he developed a deformity of the spine that eventually required spinal surgery his sophomore year which resulted in being disqualified from pursu- ing his military dreams. Robert Petersen died peacefully at home with his two daughters, caregivers and his dog Bella close by. Born in Nebraska on April 9, 1934, Bob was the only son of Hazel and Otto Petersen. He graduated from the University of Oregon Dental School in June of 1959, and it was there that he met Jerry Petersen. They were married on June 22, 1957 and enjoyed 59 years of marriage. After two years of ser- vice to our country in the Air Force, the Petersens moved to Portland, where Bob began practicing dentistry and where the young couple would raise three children. Family camping trips to the Metolius led to the purchase of a small cabin on the river in 1975 that became a year- round hub of fun for family and friends. Fishing, floating and hiking in the summer, then skiing and fixing frozen pipes in the winter led to a deep love of Central Oregon for the entire family. In 1980, Bob sold his dental practice and they It was shortly after this event that Galen was diag- nosed with bipolar disorder and began struggling with depression. While exploring dif- ferent work opportunities, Galen previously worked at Bird Gard and was cur- rently employed with DGS at the Redmond Airport. Wherever Galen contrib- uted his talents and person- ality, he made a wonderful and lasting impression. He was still trying to figure out what he wanted to be when he grew up while making each job enjoyable for his coworkers. Galen was truly loved by his many friends and fam- ily members. He had a spe- cial gift of making everyone feel included and valued and lived his life as if there were no strangers, just friends he hadn’t yet met. Many hearts are broken and longing for the years and experiences cut short. The Boles family would like to encourage anyone suffering from depres- sion to please reach out for help. She has had multiple surgeries and continues to heal. Juliana is in need of a prosthetic eye but insurance will only cover part of it. After a few years in the tiny cabin on the river they purchased a home in Camp Sherman, and opened the Metolius Inn Bed & Breakfast, where they enjoyed hosting guests from across the country and beyond. In 1982 the couple purchased the Paper Place in Sisters, and Bob settled hap- pily into his new role as the quiet one behind the scenes, and for the next 32 years he loved being a part of the Sisters business community. Bob and Jerry loved the Southwest desert, Native American art and artifacts, and they enjoyed many vis- its to Arizona over the years. Bob loved his quiet time reading, walking the dog, and complaining about the pollen! He lost Jerry in May of 2017, and the last year was a difficult one for him. The family is grateful to the local caregivers and hospice staff who showered Bob with kindness and affection in his final months; allowing him to remain at home. Robert is survived by his three children: Erick Petersen, Kristen Newton, and Kara Petersen; six grandchildren: Jensen, Ta y a , M a s o n , L o g a n , Lydia, and Joshua; and two great-grandchildren. A private celebration of life was held on the banks of the Metolius River. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations and other offers of support and appre- ciation be made to our local hospice organizations and the Central Oregon Humane Society in recognition of the remarkable work these orga- nizations do for the people and pets of Central Oregon, and the beautiful community of Sisters that Robert called home.
