Your 5-year-old daughter scrambles up to the top porch rail and, without hesitation, jumps onto the grass below. You gulp; she lands safely, pumping her fist in triumph. “She’s just like her father,” you sigh. Is she? Are genetics that predictive of risky behavior? How about her little brother, who at three insists on stack- ing his Legos by color in neat rows, all exactly the same height. You wonder if your propensity for alphabetizing spices could help explain his behavior. On the other hand, the children have watched their father do some crazy stuff and they know you like the silverware drawer kept per- fectly neat, knife blades aligned to the left. So — nature or nurture? It’s a question that has bur- dened great thinkers for thousands of years. Genetic scientists may be clos- ing in on some surprising answers. Hayden Homes began their philanthropic activities on a small scale one Christmas in Moses Lake, Washington, where they were building homes. Hayden comptroller Vickie Gibbs informed owner Hayden Watson there were 150 people in the community in need of Christmas baskets, so the company donated $500 to that project. Whispers from the past... By Sue Stafford Correspondent Recently, the members of the Three Sisters Historical Society board were treated to a day spent exploring the former Edgington Ranch located south of town, with descendants of Ellis and Ellen Edgington. The ranch is a lovely par- cel of land consisting of pine forests, open meadows, and spectacular mountain views. What makes it special is the abundance of vegetation normally seen on the west side of the Cascades — tow- ering Douglas fir trees, a large spring-fed pond surrounded by lush green plants, grasses, and dense stands of horsetail reeds. The Edgingtons’ grand- children — Cliff Edgington, Dennis Gallagher, and Norah Gallagher Roberts — trans- ported the group back to the days of their childhood as they told stories of life on the ranch. Cliff’s father, Jesse, raised his four children on the ranch. Norah and Dennis visited in the summer and for holidays after their fam- ily moved to the Willamette Valley. For Norah, the ranch horses held special interest. On her summer visits she would take the horses out rid- ing all day through the mead- ows and pine forests. Ellis originally purchased the full 1,200 acres from William Cox in 1912. Cox had homesteaded the land in 1882 and had one of the first sawmills in the Sisters area.
