Mathews, Tribune News Service By Jim Anderson Correspondent One of the growing group of people who have taken nature-watching far beyond what anyone thought would happen back in the early 1900s, are those who have become Citizen Scientists. Their contribution to the wel- fare of birds, bees, butterflies and the Earth’s ecosystems is magnificent. The small handful of Citizen Scientists working on the welfare of the monarch butterfly is becoming most helpful. They raise monarchs and then tag them when they are off on their migratory flight, providing researchers all kinds of helpful data. The book “Journey,” developed by future Citizen Scientist students with their teacher Susie Werts at Sisters Middle School with the help of writer Jean Nave is an example. Hawk Watch is another Citizen Scientist project... Hawk Watch is another Citizen Scientist project that helps birds and gives people a worthwhile and fun-filled activity. It’s com- ing September 22-23 and 29-30, offered for both long- time birders and anyone who wants to spend time learning the art of birding and con- ducting a population survey. Every raptor that passes over the area where the par- ticipants are counting, in this case Green Ridge on the Sisters Ranger District, is another link in the chain of data that looks for population trends in birds. Our smallest falcon, the kestrel, and the beautiful swainson hawk that migrates to the Northwest from South America, pass over the ridge, along with bald and golden eagles and the would-be- raptor songbirds, Northern shrikes. This year the local East Cascades Audubon Society (ECAS) is inviting pros and new birders to help in the count. If you can’t make the September count, ECAS is doing another migra- tion observation for later migrants (and counters) in October. Woman who left kids to tan appealing sentence BEND, Ore. (AP) — A woman who abandoned and drugged children at her Bend daycare so she could go tanning is appealing her 21-year prison sentence. January Neatherlin was assigned consecutive prison sentences after pleading guilty in Deschutes County Circuit Court to 11 counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment and one count of third-degree assault. The Bulletin reported Monday that Neatherlin’s appellate lawyer, Irene B. Taylor, filed a notice of appeal, writing that Neatherlin objects to the imposition of consecutive sentences. Neatherlin was sentenced in March after pleading guilty to the crimes. She was arrested after police found seven children younger than 5 unattended at her illegal daycare center.
