Continued from page 1 representative of the Forest Service in Oregon. “Catherine asked me if there were any quilters in Sisters who would make and donate 15 tree skirts,” Pilak said. “I took the request to our local guild that has been in existence for over 38 years.” Wells and quilting friend Joyce Coats, who has since passed away, founded EOCQ with seven members, and over the years the group has grown to over 55 quilters. “We are part of a loosely organized group compared to other quilt guilds, but we do a lot of meaningful work,” Wells said. “We end up hav- ing a little more time to share our work with others, whether it’s making the quilts for kids or firefighters’ families.” In addition to sharing quilting tips and their proj- ects, EOCQ has a commu- nity project, Quilts for Kids. The group makes and donates more than 400 quilts each year to the community. From 1980 to 2005, EOCQ was the group that assisted Wells in producing the annual quilt show (labor, logistics, hanging quilts, organizing, special events). The quilt group meets monthly, and the members bring canned foods to the meeting and donate them to the local food bank. “I think that the quilters are the quiet backbone of goodness in our community,” Pilak said. June Jaeger’s tree skirt is representational of “Sisters Country” and has captured the area’s outdoor activities of skiing, fishing and hiking. Jaeger quilted in the historic Sisters Saloon & Ranch Grill. The 2018 National Christmas Tree will come from Sweet Home. Agency backed solar company P O RT L A N D , Ore. (AP) — An Oregon agency continued to financially back a solar panel company despite its default on loan repayments to the state. The state gave $13.5 million in tax credits, $10 million in direct financial assistance and millions of dollars in tax breaks to SoloPower Systems when it entered Portland eight years ago, The Oregonian/ OregonLive reported Tuesday. The company, which promised lighter, thinner solar panels, shut down its factory and laid off most of its employees in 2013. It later stopped making payments on its state loan. The Oregon Secretary of State is questioning the state Department of Energy’s decision to make rent payments on behalf of the company, which had a “history of loan default, forbearance, and restructuring,” according to a recently released audit. The company asked for help from the state Department of Energy in paying its rent last July, receiving nearly $642,000. Auditors found no evidence that the department received collateral or security for those payments, and it did not consultant an independent expert, according to the audit. “We had multiple discussions with Goldman Sachs from August to October 2017,” agency spokeswoman Rachel Wray said. “Eventually that conversation went quiet...” SISTERS 549-9388 M&J CARPET CLEANING Obituary Jack Shaffer Kinsey 2ugust 12, 1925 – 2ugust 21, 2018 Jack Shaffer Kinsey was born in Georgetown, Pennsylvania, to Arthur Davis Kinsey and Sidney Mae Kinsey. He attended Weir High in Weirton, West Virginia, and upon gradu- ation in 1943, entered the U.S. Navy as a SeaBee. He served in the Pacific Theater in the South China Sea and the Philippines. After World War II ended, he entered Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia, where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in education. Jack began his teaching/coaching career in Follansbee, West Virginia, in 1948 and then moved to Southern California and began a long career of teaching and coaching at Lynwood High School in Lynwood, California. He was known as Coach Kinsey there and coached football, baseball and tennis. He also taught driver’s education. Jack earned his Masters in Education from USC in 1960 and entered high school administration in Northern California in the late 1960s. His administration career took him from the Central Valley to the Sierra Nevadas and eventually on to Kansas City, Missouri. He retired from educa- tion and entered the real estate industry. While living in Modesto, Jack served on the boards of directors of Modesto Union Gospel Mission and Modesto Covenant Church. Jack retired in 2001 and relocated to Sisters, where he lived with his wife, Marilyn Kinsey. At one point, Jack became the Post Commander of the Sisters branch of the VFW, and was active in that organization. Jack is survived by his wife, Marilyn; sons Kurt Iuli-Kinsey and Scott Arden; daughter Kathi Martin; nine grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren and hun- dreds of adopted family and friends across the world.
