Wednesday, August 1, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 7 SPRD offers community dinner By Sue Stafford Correspondent As a way to appreciate the community for their support of Sisters Park & Recreation District, the board of directors is hosting the Community “D-ATE” Night, an evening of food and fun for the whole family. To thank the voters for approving the SPRD levy on the May ballot, plus to celebrate and recognize the people and programs that support the entire commu- nity of Sisters, as well as SPRD, the board would like the community to congregate at Village Green Park (corner of East Washington Avenue and South Elm Street) on Thursday, August 9, 6 to 8 p.m. to grab a plate and build their own rice bowl, with a dessert and beverage. The evening is also a chance to acknowledge local opportunities to recreate, both indoors and outdoors, with vendor booths provid- ing information about avail- able programs and activities throughout Sisters Country. Try your hand and learn how you can participate at SPRD with activity and information stations on their programs, providing fun and games for all ages – tai chi, Zumba, disc golf, and ping-pong, among others. Parents will be able to register their children for fall sports. Board Treasurer Peggy Tehan added, “The dinner, which we’re calling D-ATE Night, will encourage resi- dents of all ages to Congreg- ATE, Recre-ATE, Particip- ATE, Appreci-ATE and Grab a Pl-ATE. We want this event to be a very big thank you to the community for sup- porting SPRD’s local option levy and to recognize what an important role SPRD, and recreation of all kinds, play in Sisters. We want to encourage residents of Sisters Country to be active — take advantage of the programs offered by SPRD and the rec- reational opportunities that surround us.” The Anvil Blasters and the Sisters ukulele group will provide music. The SPRD board will be greeting, serv- ing, and providing informa- tion. Look for them in their matching blue polo shirts. The entire event, including dinner, is free, but an RSVP by August 6 is required to help with planning. Call 541-549-2019, visit www. sistersrecreation.com, or stop by the SPRD office at 1750 W. Sisters Habitat is dedicated to providing afford- able and energy-efficient housing to folks living and/or working in the Sisters School District. To date, 63 families have purchased their Habitat homes through the program. In addition, Sisters Habitat offers a home-repair program for individuals who own their own home and need assis- tance. Some of the services available may include roof repair, ADA help, building Retirement is better at ramps and exterior paint- ing. Applications are cur- rently being accepted for both programs. Sisters Habitat for Humanity’s criteria for selec- tion of homeowners is based on the family’s need for adequate shelter, the ability to pay a mortgage or repair costs, and the willingness to partner. Homeowner families are required to invest 500 “sweat- equity” labor hours prior to occupying their home. All homes are built by volunteers working under the supervision of a construction manager.
