Wednesday, June 6, 2018 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 5 Five Outlaws named to all-league girls lacrosse teams By Rongi Yost Correspondent The Lady Outlaws had five players who earned all- league recognition this year, including sisters Ellie and Mia Cook, who were first-team selections, and Pearl Gregg, Sydney Head, and Kaylee Huber, who earned second- team honors. Junior Ellie (junior) was named first-team all-league attack and was a constant scoring threat for the Outlaws. She finished league with 34 goals, 31 ground balls, 15 draw controls, and five caused turnovers. “There’s no question as to why Ellie was one of the first-team all-league selec- tions,” said Coach Mikaela Trott. “She’s our top scorer, who works to share the ball on offense. She spends her water breaks practicing her shot and it shows. She mastered wrap- ping the crease this year. If she misses a shot, she won’t stop until she recovers the ball and scores. This year she stuffed the goalie multiple times when the goalie tried to clear the ball, and that’s hard to do! Besides being a great player, she continues to be a shining light in my life, her teammates lives and beyond.” Mia (junior), was a first team pick at midfield, and CORRECTION Oregon Lifestyle Property Group Broker Courteney Satko’s name was misspelled on page 25 in the May 30 issue of The Nugget. was also a scoring threat. Mia was the team’s second-highest scorer with 25 goals. In addi- tion, she had 31 ground balls, 13 caused turnovers, and 18 draw controls. “Mia can do it all,” said Trott. “She’s a beast on defense, and uses her height and speed to get back and pro- tect the cage, and make inter- ceptions when possible. She uses her length to hustle down the field during midfield tran- sitions. On attack, she chooses her shots thoughtfully, and places them with great con- sistency. She has a 67.7 shot percentage, the highest on our team. Mia is incredibly com- petitive, fun, and thoughtful, on and off the field.” Junior Sydney Head was a second-team midfielder. Sydney took the majority of the draw controls for the Outlaws and led the team with 45 on the season. She also scored 17 goals, recorded 48 ground balls, and 16 caused turnovers. “Sydney was our lead drawer on the center, and we are better for it!” said Trott. “Part skill, and part determi- nation to get the ball, she got 45 of our draw controls this year, and that is a true feat! She was even out for three games due to a concussion. It’s an impressive number, and often is the determining factor as to winning a game. Sydney isn’t just a drawer, she’s also a fantastic defensive/attack player, shooting whenever she can, making assists, and is tied with Olivia (Hougham) for the most ground balls of the sea- son. She’s as sweet as can be and makes everyone feel wel- comed, loved, and happy.” Huber (sophomore) was also a second-team all-league midfielder. Over the course of the season Kaylee scored 24 goals, and recorded 25 ground balls, 28 draw controls, and 17 caused turnovers. “Kaylee is an impressive player to watch,” stated Trott. “She’s strong, fast, deter- mined, and incredibly skilled. She is one of our lead scorers, has a gift for the draw, and is a force to be reckoned with on defense. She knows her place on the field, and is coachable, consistent, and a team player. Kaylee will have the attention of college scouts, no question about it. She’s a very sweet girl, who is a joy to know.” Freshman Pearl Gregg rounded out the all-league honors. Pearl scored 19 goals for Sisters, and recorded 31 ground balls, 11 caused turn- overs, and five draw controls. “Pearl has a passion for the game of lacrosse,” said Trott. “She is a hard-working athlete who works on her stick skills on and off the field, and it shows. She’s so fun to watch, and has had some really amaz- ing goals this season. Most notably, she had a wicked penalty shot at our playoff game that made the crowd roar! Pearl displays a competi- tive attitude mixed with genu- ine passion and drive to win each game. She always chases after the ball when it’s lost on our attack, and fights to get it back, and often does. She’s downright fun!” In addition, Coach Mikaela Trott was named Coach of the Year. Trott said, “I feel honored to have won Coach of the Year. It’s always important for me to win with dignity, and lose with grace, and I think that was reflected with this honor.” sunday is Les Schwab Family day at Sisters Rodeo JUNE 10 AT 1 PM Kids are free Twelve & Under DON’T MISS this week’s Nugget inserts!
